Importance of functionalization

Indeed, these reactions proceed at 25 °C in ethanol-aqueous media in the absence of transition metal catalysts. The ease with which P-H bonds in primary phosphines can be converted to P-C bonds, as shown in Schemes 9 and 10, demonstrates the importance of primary phosphines in the design and development of novel organophosphorus compounds. In particular, functionalized hydroxymethyl phosphines have become ubiquitous in the development of water-soluble transition metal/organometallic compounds for potential applications in biphasic aqueous-organic catalysis and also in transition metal based pharmaceutical development [53-62]. Extensive investigations on the coordination chemistry of hydroxymethyl phosphines have demonstrated unique stereospe-cific and kinetic propensity of this class of water-soluble phosphines [53-62]. Representative examples outlined in Fig. 4, depict bidentate and multidentate coordination modes and the unique kinetic propensity to stabilize various oxidation states of metal centers, such as Re( V), Rh(III), Pt(II) and Au(I), in aqueous media [53 - 62]. Therefore, the importance of functionalized primary phosphines in the development of multidentate water-soluble phosphines cannot be overemphasized. 

Points 1 and 5 refer to the increased importance of functional chemicals [291]. Owing to the wide parameter space determining functionality (not only molecular diversity), this demands much higher flexibility and speed in the preparation of new samples during the research phase. The behavior of complex molecular mixtures needs to be understood. In particular, product application, formulation, and blending skills need to be developed and acquired. In a more remote vision, this demands on-site distributed manufacture of functional chemicals such as paints and similar products. 

Use of soy protein products in brine injected or absorbed whole muscle meat products such as beef, poultry, and seafood is reviewed. The importance of functionality on brine performance and within muscle tissue is stressed. Major considerations are selection of the proper soy protein, accompanying functionalities such as water-binding, gelling and viscosity, the specific meat system and requirements pertaining to nutrition, processing and marketing. 

Further examples of the importance of functional groups for behavior are the responses of simfish to steroids in beetles, their prey reactions of birds and mammals to capsaicin-related compounds and fear behavior of rats when exposed to sulfur compoimds from fox urine and feces.

The importance of functional LDL receptors for the removal of LDL from circulation in subjects with FH has been confirmed studying in-vivo the clearance rate of radiolabeled LDL injected intravenously, as was done for the patient described in the case report before and after gene therapy. The removal time of LDL in subjects with heterozygous FH is approximately twice as long and in those with homozygous FH more than three times as long compared to that of normal controls. 

Whatever data we have generally available in most publications are mean concentrations of litter or leaves of all species in an area. For example, it is not all species which contribute to fixation of atmospheric nitrogen and contribute to a general improvement of soil fertility. Calcicole species can probably survive well only on soils with neutral or alkaline pH. The ecological significance of the differences in relative importance of functional groups such as Al-accumulators or Leguminosae in native communities is rarely discussed in the literature (Haridasan and Araujo 1988). 

Clearly, the key to insight relies on chemical modification to determine the relative importance of functional groups for molecular recognition. Often more subtle effects than the simple presence or absence of a group are... 

In order to understand the importance of functionally active leads in the discovery process, I would like to describe a model for drug development that I have used in my work as a consultant. It is based on the need to establish a learning cycle between biologists and chemists, which progressively develops a chemical lead into a drug that is a candidate for clinical trials. This process is really the one on which technical innovations should be focused, because it is the rate-limiting step in the discovery process.
