Several major surveys of dietary supplement utilization have been conducted recently. The Saskatchewan Nutriceutical Network (SNN) (13), National Nutritional Food Association (NNFA) (14), Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA) (11), Landmark Healthcare, Inc. (16), The NMI (18), individual investigators (9,12), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (15), and FDA (10) have all recently either conducted or contracted market analyses of CAM utilization in the United States, which included botanicals. Each survey is presented individually because the data are so heterogeneous among studies.

A medication error is any preventable event that may-cause or lead to inappropriate medication use or patient harm, while the medication is in the control ofthe healthcare professional, patient, or consumer. Such events may be related to professional practice, healthcare products, procedures, and systems including prescribing order communication product labeling, packaging, and nomenclature compounding dispensing distribution administration education -monitoring and use. 

Official standards are absolutely necessary to ensure the quality, reliability, and homogeneity of herbal products for consumers. Standardized products are paramount to those in healthcare planning to conduct clinical research with these products. Independent laboratories and university-affiliated research reports have documented the considerable variation that exists in terms of quality and reliability in these products. Abroad, the ESCOP, composed of manufacturers of herbal medicines and herbal associations, is working with European research groups to develop quality-control standards for the production of natural products. This committee is developing monographs for incorporation into such references as the British Herbal Pharmacopoeia and the British Herbal Compendium. 

In 2001, USP created the Dietary Supplement Verification Program (DSVP) to help inform and safeguard the growing number of consumers who use dietary supplements. The program responds to the need to assure the public that dietary supplement products contain the ingredients stated on the product label. If a product submitted to DSVP meets USP s rigorous standards, it will be awarded the DSVP verification mark. The Healthcare Personnel Handwash Test (HCPHWT) was originally proposed to evaluate products specifically intended for use in healthcare settings [1] and has become the standard evaluation tool for consumer antimicrobial products. Consumers have many distinct and unique habits and practices that differ from those found in the healthcare setting. The purpose of this chapter is to discuss variables that can affect the performance of the test and its utility for evaluating handwashing products used by consumers. 

The type of product form to be evaluated in the HCPHWT can affect the outcome of the test. The HCPHWT was specifically designed to evaluate traditional rinse-off products for healthcare workers. This method may not be appropriate for other types of hand cleaners. Alternative products to soap and water such as hand sanitizers and towelettes are being marketed to consumers. These product forms are generally used when soap and water are not available. The appropriate way to evaluate the efficacy of leave-on alternative hand hygiene products is being debated. The first chapter in this section. Chapter 21, presents an argument for the appropriateness of using the healthcare personnel handwash evaluation procedure—the one used in medical applications—to evaluate general consumer antimicrobial products that will not be used in the medical sector. Chapter 22 presents alternative ways for evaluating consumer topical antimicrobial products. Chapter 22 points to the concern that consumer topical antimicrobial products, to be effective, need antimicrobial properties, as well as skin care properties. The final chapter (Chapter 23) highlights characteristics important in the endeavor to develop consumer topical antimicrobial products.
