Castor

The name ricinoleic acid is used in commerce for the mixture of fatty acids obtained by hydrolysing castor oil, and its salts are called ricinoleates. [Pg.346]

HOOC-[CHa]8-COOH, CioH.aO. Colourless leaflets m.p. 134°C. Manufactured by heating castor oil with alkalis or by distillation of oleic acid. Forms an anhydride, m.p. 78 C. The esters of sebacic acid are used as plasticizers, especially for vinyl resins. [Pg.354]

HOaQCHjlfiCOiH, CSH14O4. Important dicarboxylic acid obtained by oxidizing ricino-leic acid (from castor oil) also obtained by oxidation of cyclo-octene or cyclo-octadiene formerly obtained from cork. Used in the formation of alkyd resins and polyamides. Esters are used as plasticizers and heavy duty lubricants and oils. [Pg.375]

Lithium hydroxide with 12-hydroxy-stearic acid (or hydrogenated castor oil) they form the family of lithium greases very commonly used for general lubrication and bearing lubrication. [Pg.281]

A convenient source of the enzyme is castor oil seeds. The oil of the seeds is itself an ester, and therefore if the action of the enzyme is to be demonstrated on an extraneous ester, the castor oil must first be completely removed by extraction with ether. This, however, is a long process and may require several days for completion. The hydrolysing action of the enzyme on the oil in I he seed can however be demonstrated as described on p. 512.
