Bodied refers to polymerized castor oil of higher viscosity unbodied refers to dehydrated castor oil that has not been additionally heat polymerized. Corresponds to F-1 designation in Gardner-Floldt units. 

Castor oil, derived from the beans of Acinus communis is converted to a drying oil by heating with catalysts to yield dehydrated castor oil.

Short drying oil alkyds are typically made of linseed, soya, or dehydrated castor oils. The linseed based alkyds are used in automotive refinishing enamels and in general purpose air drying enamels. 

Originally based on linseed oil other oils have included tung, dehydrated castor oil and various resins. Drying action involves resinification by atmospheric oxidation. Drying can be accelerated by the addition of certain metals (lead, cobalt, manganese) as driers. Time to dryness may be a few hours to a matter of seconds. 

Epoxy resins have provided excellent corrosion resistant primers for appliances. These can be made from epoxy resins esterified with dehydrated castor oil fatty acids and cured with melamine. Excellent detergent resistance and corrosion resistance are obtained from this type of resin system.
