Polyoxyl 40 hydrogenated castor oil Polyoxyethylene castor oil derivatives are a series of materials obtained by reacting varying amounts of ethylene oxide with either castor oil or hydrogenated castor oil. Several different types of material are commercially available, the best-known being the Cremophor series (BASF Corp.). Of these, two castor oil derivatives are listed in the PhEur 2005 and USPNE 23. [Pg.572]

Synonyms applicable to polyoxyethylene castor oil derivatives are shown below. See Table I for information on specific materials. [Pg.572]

Polyoxyethylene castor oil derivatives are complex mixtures of various hydrophobic and hydrophilic components. Members within each range have different degrees of ethoxylation (moles)/PEG units as indicated by their numerical sufffix ( ). The chemical structures of the polyethoxylated hydrogenated castor oils are analogous to polyethoxylated castor oils with the exception that the double bond in the fatty chain has been saturated by hydrogenation. [Pg.572]

Polyoxyethylene castor oil derivatives are nonionic surfactants used in oral, topical, and parenteral pharmaceutical formulations. [Pg.573]

Polyoxyethylene castor oil derivatives have been used experimentally as a surfactant for the controlled release matrix pellet formulation containing nanocrystalline ketoprofen, " and for the transdermal delivery of vinpocetin. " ... [Pg.573]

Although the method of manufacture used for polyoxyethylene castor oil derivatives ensures that they are near-sterile, microbial contamination can occur on storage. [Pg.574]

Polyoxyethylene castor oil derivatives should be stored in a well-filled, airtight container, protected from light, in a cool, dry place. [Pg.574]

Polyoxyethylene castor oil derivatives are prepared by reacting varying amounts of ethylene oxide with either castor oil or hydrogenated castor oil under controlled conditions. [Pg.574]

Acute and chronic toxicity tests in animals have shown polyoxyethylene castor oil derivatives to be essentially nontoxic and nonirritant materials see Table However, there... [Pg.574]

Mixing lidocaine base and prilocaine base in equal parts, at room temperature, gives a eutectic mixture. This mixture is emulsified in a base that consists mainly of water and polyoxyethylene castor oil, and the anesthetics are added to the oily phase. Phenol has an excellent oil/water partition coelEcient. The oils lower the toxicity of phenol, but also slow down its rate of penetration as well as absorption of the local anesthetics. There is a competition between the phenol solution and the EMLA, which changes the activity and penetration of the combined molecules. [Pg.264]

After cyclodextrins and co-solvents, other approaches can be applied including the use of surfactants and micelle forming agents. Surfactants can be classified as amphoteric (lecithin), non-ionic (Tween 80 or Cremophor EF) or ionic (sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium palmitate). Cremophor is a polyoxyethylenated castor oil derivative which is a common solubilizing excipient in a number of formulations including those for paclitaxel, propofol, teniposide and clanfenur... [Pg.245]

Surfactants reduce surface tension and increase the solubility of lipophilic active substances in aqueous medium solubilisates are formed (see Sect. 18.3.3). Lecithin, various phospholipids, polysorbate (Tween ) and polyoxyethylene castor oils such as Cremophor EL can be used in injections [15]. [Pg.274]
