Lithium grease

Lithium hydroxide with 12-hydroxy-stearic acid (or hydrogenated castor oil) they form the family of lithium greases very commonly used for general lubrication and bearing lubrication.

Barium and lithium base greases are water resistant and will withstand temperatures of around 350°F. These greases have a long life expectancy and are suitable for bearings in hard-to-get-at places. Lithium greases are workable at -20°F. 

Lithium soap greases with added M0S2 are generally superior to the base lithium greases in wear reduction, lubrication, and mst prevention. In systems where the lithium soap acts as an EP lubricant, the M0S2 has little effect on the grease. The amounts of M0S2 added vary fi-om 0.25% to up to 25%. 

Lithium greases can be manufactured by continuous process in a heated tube reactor. This process is convenient and problem-free for simple lithium soap thickened greases. However, lithium complex greases having much higher thickener concentrations resulted in increased difficulties during the continuous production. These difficulties include wide fluctuations in flow rates, cessation of flow and resultant downtime, and greatly reduced imit production capacity.
