Fatty oils and fat-like substances - Fats and oils are esters of glycerin and higher fatty adds. In pure form, oils (castor, sea-buckthom and others) are used as remedies or as solvents for pharmaceutical substances. Fatty oils are used in medicine to make ointments, liniments and emollients, and for skin care and therapeutic massage. Some oils have therapeutic action. For example castor oil is used as a puigative and sea-buckthom is used internally to treat stomach and duodenal ulcers and externally for skin bums. Plant waxes, sterols and other substances are fat-like substances. Some of them are used in medidnal preparations. Unsaturated fatty acids (oleic, linoleic, linolenic, palmitic and other acids) prevent development of atherosclerosis. They are contained in plant seeds (almond, sunflower, flax and others), and fruits (olives and sea-buckthom). [Pg.14]

These are prepared by treating fixed oils, for example castor oil, (which contains the triglyceride of the fatty acid 12-hydroxyoleic acid) with sulphuric acid and neutralizing with sodium hydroxide solution. Sulphated castor oil is used pharmaceutically as an emulsifying agent for oil-in-water creams and ointments. It is non-irritant and is used as a cleansing agent when soap is contra-indicated. It is also used in the manufacture of shampoos and deodorant sprays. [Pg.4]

Preliminary extraction of the organic bases from oily eye-drops, ointments and suppositories is necessary before applying the general method. Extraction is made from an organic solvent with 2N acetic acid followed by pH 3 7 buffer solution. Acid extracts obtained in this way from Theo-broma Oil J5.P.C., Basis for Eye Ointments P.P. and Castor Oil P.P. contained no interfering materials. [Pg.116]
