Silver and its compounds have long been used as antimicrobial agents in medicine. The mechanisms of silver toxicity as they relate to human exposure to pharmaceuticals have been reviewed (328). Silver is active at low concentrations and has a low toxicity. The practice of instilling the eyes of infants with 1% of AgN03 solution immediately after birth is still common in some countries, for prevention of opthalmia neonatorum (329). Silver sulfadiazine 77 is clinically used as a topical antimicrobial and antifungal agent and applied as a cream to prevent bacterial infections in cases of severe burns. It is an insoluble polymeric compound and releases Ag(I) ions slowly. [Pg.240]

Nystatin is a mixture of tetraene antifungals produced by cultures of Streptomyces noursei. The principal component is nystatin Ai (Figure 3.68), but the commercial material also contains nystatin A2 and A3, which have additional glycoside residues. Nystatin is too toxic for intravenous use, but has value for oral treatment of intestinal candidiasis, as lozenges for oral infections, and as creams for topical control of Candida species. [Pg.103]

Naftitine is one of a series of aUylamine antifungal agents, derived from heterocychc spironaphthalenes. It is usually sold in the form of a 1% cream for topical treatment of dermatomycoses, dermatophytes, and yeasts. It is claimed to be more effective than the imidazoles. Local irritation and a burning sensation, if they occur, are only mild (SED-12, 684) (28), (SEDA-16, 297). [Pg.303]

Topical 2% povidone iodine solution and 0.2% chlorhexidine gluconate solution have broad antimicrobial profiles and may be used as cheap spectrum and effective antifungal agents in equine ketomycosis, particularly where Fusarium spp. are involved. A1% dermatological cream formulation of silver sulfadiazine has both antifungal and antibacterial properties and is reasonably well tolerated topically in the horse eye. Its use is advocated where cost restraints exist or for prophylaxis in comeal injuries involving embedded plant material (Hamor Whelan 1999). [Pg.232]

Tolnaftate is a synthetic antifungal agent with a narrow spectrum of activity which is limited to dermatophytes (Epidermophyton, Microsporum and Trichophyton spp.). It could be used to treat mild localized dermatophytic infection. For topical application to dogs, tolnaftate is formulated as a 1% cream containing both polyethylene glycol and propylene glycol. The powder aerosol preparation is less likely to be effective for treatment, but could be applied to prevent spread of the infection. [Pg.202]

The cream 1% contains the synthetic, broad-spectrum, antifungal agent naftifine hydrochloride. It is for topical use only. The chemical name is (E)-N-Cinnamyl-N-methyl-l-naphthalenemethyl-amine hydrochloride. Naftifine hydrochloride has an empirical formula of C21H21N HC1 and a molecular weight of 323.86. The active ingredient... [Pg.211]

The cream and lotion formulations contain the antifungal active compound oxiconazole nitrate. Both formulations are for topical dermatologic use only. The cream contains 10 mg oxiconazole per gram of cream in a white to off-white, opaque cream base of purified water USP, white petrolatum USP, stearyl alcohol NF, propylene glycol USP, polysorbate 60 NF, and cetyl alcohol NF, with benzoic... [Pg.218]

Clotrimazole, an antifungal agent, is used only topically and is available as a 1% cream, lotion, or solution (Lotrimin and Mycelex), as a 1% vaginal cream, as 100-mg or 500-mg vaginal tablets (Gyne-Lotrimin, Mycelex-G), and as 10-mg troches (Mycelex). [Pg.167]
