Because of the special stabiHty of the hexafluoroarsenate ion, there are a number of appHcations of hexafluoroarsenates. For example, onium hexafluoroarsenates (33) have been described as photoinitiators in the hardening of epoxy resins (qv). Lithium hexafluoroarsenate [29935-35-1] has been used as an electrolyte in lithium batteries (qv). Hexafluoroarsenates, especially alkaH and alkaline-earth metal salts or substituted ammonium salts, have been reported (34) to be effective as herbicides (qv). Potassium hexafluoroarsenate [17029-22-0] has been reported (35) to be particularly effective against prickly pear. BHA and BHT, which are both fat soluble, are effective ia protecting animal fat from oxidation, and are often added duting the rendering process. Propyl gallate is also effective, but it has limited fat solubiUty, and turns bluish black ia the presence of iron. It is typically used as a synergist ia combination with BHA or BHT. Benzoates. The sodium and potassium salts of ben2oic acid [65-85-0], C2H 02, ate most effective against yeast and mold. They ate used in beverages, fmit products, chemically leavened baked goods, and condiments. Owing to their inhibitory effect on yeast, they cannot be used in yeast-leavened products. Potassium ben2oate was developed for use in reduced-sodium products. Ben2oates ate permitted for use in foods up to a level of 0.1% (76). [Pg.443]

Sulfur Dioxide and Sulfites. Sulfur dioxide [7446-09-5], SO2, sodium bisulfite [15181-46-1], NaHSO, and sodium metabisulfite [23134-05-6] ate effective against molds, bacteria, and certain strains of yeast. The wine industry represents the largest user of sulfites, because the compounds do not affect the yeast needed for fermentation. Other appHcations include dehydrated fmits and vegetables, fmit juices, symps and concentrates, and fresh shrimp (79). Sulfites ate destmctive to thiamin, and cannot be used in foods, such as certain baked goods, that ate important sources of this vitamin. [Pg.443]

Herbicide Glasses and Databases. Herbicides can be classified as selective and nonselective. Selective herbicides, like 2,4-D (2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid), metolachlor [51218-45-2] and EPTC [759-94 ] are more effective against some types of plants than others, eg, broadleaved plants vs grasses. Glyphosate [1071 -83-6] is representative of the nonselective herbicides used for total vegetable control. [Pg.38]

Other Nitrogen Compounds. The basis of the sophisticated nitrogen compounds Hsted in Table 10 is the reaction of formaldehyde with amino compounds. A significant amount of Hterature details investigation of the mechanism of action, particularly whether or not the antimicrobial activity depends on decomposition to formaldehyde (40—42). These compounds tend to have substantial water solubiUty and are more effective against bacteria than fungi and yeasts. Key markets for these compounds are metalworking fluids, cosmetics, and in-can preservation of paints (see Alkanolamines Amines, fatty amines). [Pg.99]

Methoprene and hydroprene are first-generation juvenoids that iacorporate minor stmctural optimisation of neotenin to increase persistence. Methoprene, 1-isopropyl (E,E)-ll-methoxy-3,7,ll-tnmethyl dodecadi-2,4-enoate (129) (bp 100 C/6.7 Pa, vp 3.5 mPa at 25°C), is soluble ia water to 1.4 mg/L. The rat oral LD q is >34,000 mg/kg. Methoprene has been used as a mosquito larvicide, ia baits for ant control, and as a catde feed-through treatment for horn fly control. Hydroprene, methyl (H,H)-3,7,ll-trimethyl-dodecadi-2,4-enoate (130) (bp 174°C at 2.5 kPa, vp 2.5 mPa at 25°C), is soluble ia water to 0.54 mg/L. The rat oral LD q is >34,000 mg/kg. Hydroprene is especially effective against aphids and cockroaches. [Pg.294]

Sulphenone /5 (9-J(9-, /)-chlorophenyl phenyl sulfone (142), is a white soHd (mp 98°C). The technical material consists of ca 80% of this compound, with small amounts of 0- and y -isomers, bis(/)-chlorophenyl) sulfone, and diphenyl sulfone. Sulphenone is effective against all stages of mites. Its oral LD q to the rat is >2000 mg. [Pg.295]

Encapsulated dia2innon sold as Knox-Out 2FM is a commercial encapsulated pesticide formulation said to have reduced dermal and oral toxicity as well as prolonged effectiveness. The capsules, prepared by interfacial polymeri2ation, are claimed to be highly effective against cockroaches with no objectionable odor and low insect repeUence. The capsules are beheved to function as a contact poison when insects walk on it and as a stomach poison when insects preen capsules stuck to their legs and ingest them (71). [Pg.325]

Disinfection. Ozone is a more effective broad-spectmm disinfectant than chlorine-based compounds (105). Ozone is very effective against bacteria because even concentrations as low as 0.01 ppm are toxic to bacteria. Teratogenic effects have been noted with 2- and 4-aminophenol in the hamster, but 3-aminophenol was without effect in the hamster and rat (129,130). 4-Aminophenol is known to inhibit DNA synthesis and alter DNA stmcture in human lymphoblasts (131,132) and is mutagenic in mouse micronuclei tests (133). The aminophenols have been shown to be genotoxic, as evidenced by the induction of sister chromatid exchanges (134,135), but they also exert a protective effect against DNA interaction with other noxious chemicals (136).
