Candidiasis cutaneous

It is indicated in dermatophytoses, tinea versicolor, onychomycoses, oropharyngeal candidiasis, cutaneous candidiasis, chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis, oculomycoses systemic mycoses like cryptococcosis, candidiasis and aspergillosis subcutaneous mycoses like sporotrichosis and chromomycosis.

Ketoconazole remains useful in the treatment of cutaneous and mucous membrane dermatophyte and yeast infections, but it has been replaced by the newer triazoles in the treatment of most serious Candida infections and disseminated mycoses. Ketoconazole is usually effective in the treatment of thrush, but fluconazole is superior to ketoconazole for refractory thrush. Widespread dermatophyte infections on skin surfaces can be treated easily with oral ketoconazole when the use of topical antifungal agents would be impractical. Treatment of vulvovaginal candidiasis with topical imidazoles is less expensive. 

Cutaneous and mucocutaneous infections caused by Candida albicans, such as paronychia, oral thrush, and intertriginous candidiasis (Topical) Apply liberally to the affected area and rub in 2-4 times/day. 

Oropharyngeal candidiasis treatment PO 10 mg 5 times/day for 14 days. Oropharyngeal candidiasis prophylaxis PO 10 mg 3 times/day Dermatophytosis, cutaneous candidiasis Topical 2 times/day. Therapeutic effect may take up to 8 wk. 

Topical fungal infections, cutaneous candidiasis Topical Apply liberally 2 times/day, morning and evening. 

It is used orally for intestinal candidiasis, topically for oral, vaginal and cutaneous candidiasis and hospital treatment of progressive and potentially fatal systemic fungal infections. It is the gold standard of antifungal therapy. Flucytosine has supraadditive action with amphotericin B if the fungi is sensitive to both. It is also potentiated by rifampicin and minocycline. 

It is obtained from Streptomyces pimprina and effective against blastomycosis, cryptococcosis, vaginal and cutaneous candidiasis. Trichomonas vaginitis and Aspergillus otomycosis.

Ciclopirox olamine is available as a 1% cream and lotion applied topically for the treatment of cutaneous candidiasis and tinea corporis, cruris, pedis, and versicolor. 

Opaque cells produce the secreted aspartic proteinases Sap Ip, Sap2p and Sap3p in vitro, while the white form of the same strain cultured under identical conditions produces Sap2p only [22-24]. In an intravenous infection model, the white phenotype was more virulent than the opaque phenotype. In contrast, in a murine cutaneous candidiasis model, the opaque phenotype was more infectious [25]. In addition to yeast-hyphal dimorphism, phenotypic switching can provide a means for rapid adaptation of C. albicans to a changing environment in different anatomical locations.
