Formulae empirical

Empirical formula of a molecule represents the simplest ratio of the atoms present in the molecule. For example, acetylene has the molecular formula CjHj. The empirical formula of acetylene is CH. In essence, empirical formula gives the simplest ratio of atoms in a molecule. [Pg.11]

Notice that sometimes the empirical formula is the same as the molecular formula as in the case of water (H O). [Pg.11]

This only expresses the relative number of atoms of each element in a compound. Nevertheless, it is the first step in the experimental determination of the molecular formula of a compound from its percentage composition. [Pg.5]

Thus A contains 42.9% C and 57.1% O calculate its empirical/ molecular formula [Pg.5]

Given the molecular formula of ethanoic acid, CH3CO2H what percentages of C, H and N are present  [Pg.6]

This indicates the ratio of the constituent elements within a molecule using the smallest possible integers, i.e. CH20 rather than C6H1206 for the glucose molecule. It conveys the least amount of [Pg.405]

Hume-Rothery s rule The statement that the phase of many alloys is determined by the ratio.s of total valency electrons to the number of atoms in the empirical formula. See electron compounds. [Pg.206]

Some empirical formulas have been devised to link the cetane index to the Diesel Index (D.l.) or even directly to the aniline point. We will cite two such formulas here in order to illustrate their comparative values C ... [Pg.220]

In empirical formulas of inorganic compounds, electropositive elements are listed first [3]. The stoichiometry of the element symbols is indicated at the lower right-hand side by index numbers. If necessary, the charges of ions are placed at the top right-hand side next to the element symbol (e.g., S "). In ions of complexes, the central atom is specified before the ligands are listed in alphabetical order, the complex ion is set in square brackets (e.g., Na2[Sn(OH)+]). [Pg.20]

The elements of an organic compound are listed in empirical formulas according to the Hill system [8] and the stoichiometry is indicated by index numbers. Hill positioned the carbon and the hydrogen atoms in the first and the second places, with heteroatoms following them in alphabetical order, e.g., C9H11NO2. However, it was recognized that different compounds could have the same empirical formula (see Section 2.8.2, on isomerism). Therefore, fine subdivisions of the empirical... [Pg.20]

As an example, the empirical formula of phenylalanine may be split into a more extended form that shows the presence of a phenyl ring, as well as an amino and a carboxylic acid group (the condensed form in Figure 2-4). [Pg.21]

In many cases, quite a few different structural formulas can be produced for one and the same empirical formula (Figure 2-39). [Pg.57]

Figure 2-39. The empirical formula of C3H6O can be expressed by seven structure diagrams and even more compound names. Figure 2-39. The empirical formula of C3H6O can be expressed by seven structure diagrams and even more compound names.
The earlier sections have only considered the way atoms are bonded to each other in a molecule (topology) and how this is translated into a computer-readable form. Chemists define this arrangement of the bonds as the constitution of a molecule. The example in Figure 2-39, Section 2.5.2.1, shows that molecules with a given empirical formula, e.g., C H O, can have several different structures, which are called isomers [lOOj. Isomeric structures can be divided into constitutional isomers and stereoisomers (see Figure 2-67). [Pg.75]

Besides structure and substructure searches, Gmclin provides a special search strategy for coordiuation compouuds which is found in no other database the ligand search system, This superior search method gives access to coordination compounds from a completely different point of view it is possible to retrieve all coordination compounds with the same ligand environment, independently of the central atom or the empirical formula of the compound. [Pg.249]

To seat ch for available starting materials, similarity searches, substructure searches, and some classical retrieval methods such as full structure searches, name searches, empirical formula searches, etc., have been integrated into the system. All searches can be applied to a number of catalogs of available fine chemicals (c.g, Fluka 154]. In addition, compound libraries such as in-housc catalogs can easily be integrated. [Pg.579]

In the mid-nineteenth century, the empirical formula of benzene, was known but its structural formula was tiot. Two proposed structures... [Pg.326]

In 1825 Michael Faraday isolated a new hydrocarbon from illuminating gas which he called bicarburet of hydrogen Nine years later Eilhardt Mitscherlich of the University of Berlin prepared the same substance by heating benzoic acid with lime and found it to be a hydrocarbon having the empirical formula C H ... [Pg.424]
