Acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber applications

In the past chemical cure linings have been employed on a wide scale. These linings, usually based on natural rubber or acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber consist of a standard lining compound with a chemical activator such as dibenzylamine incorporated in the formulation. Prior to the application of the lining to the substrate, the individual sheets of rubber are dipped or brush coated with carbon disulphide or a solution of a xanthogen disulphide in a solvent. The carbon disulphide or xanthogen disulphide permeates the rubber and combines with the dibenzylamine to form an ultra-fast dithiocar-bamate accelerator in situ, and thus the rubber rapidly vulcanises at ambient temperature. [Pg.940]

The homopolymers, which are formed from alkyl cyanoacrylate monomers, are inherently brittle. For applications which require a toughened adhesive, rubbers or elastomers can be added to improve toughness, without a substantial loss of adhesion. The rubbers and elastomers which have been used for toughening, include ethylene/acrylate copolymers, acrylonitrile/butadiene/styrene (ABS) copolymers, and methacrylate/butadiene/styrene (MBS) copolymers. An example of this type of a safer chemical is methacrylonitrile (1) compared with acrylonitrile (2) (Figure 1.1). Both compounds are a, 3-unsaturated aliphatic nitriles, and structurally very similar, but 2 causes cancer whereas 1 does not appear to do so. ANs are those that contain a majority of nitrile polymers. They provide good gas barrier, chemical resistance, and low taste and odor transfer with good impact properties when modified with rubber. Extruded sheet is used extensively in food packaging and rigid packaging applications. This crystalline TP is most useful in copolymers. Its copolymer with butadiene is nitrile rubber. Acrylonitrile-butadiene copolymers with styrene (SAN) exist that are tougher than PS. It is also used as a synthetic fiber and as a chemical intermediate. [Pg.69]

Another promising field of application of Th-FFF is the investigation of gel/microgel mixtures with polymers as pioneered by Lee et al. [355,356], A major advantage is that for the Th-FFF experiment no filtration is required to endanger material loss.
