Acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber, NBR, styrene-aciylonitrile rubber, SAN, ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer, EVA, and acrylic copolymers are helpful modifications of polyvinylchloride that change its processing characteristics and elastomeric properties. Blending with these copolymers helps to reduce the requirement for low molecular weight plasticizers. Ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer plays a role of high molecular weight plasticizer in production of vinyl hose. This reduces the amount of DOP used in flexible hose applications. Ethylene copolymer is used plasticize PVC that reduces gel. "" Phthalate plasticizers can be eliminated from water based adhesives because of utilization of vinyl acetate ethylene copolymer as a high molecular plasticizer/modifier. " ... [Pg.67]

Most practical problems are concerned not with short-term faQure in active environments, but with long-term crazing in relatively mild environments. Modification of the chemical structure is often sufficient to overcome this problem. For example, pofys ene crazes at low strains in air and at even lower strains in a range of liquid environments, whereas styrene-aciylonitrile copolymers (SAN) are more resistant. The nitrile group (—C=N) carries an electric dipole which provides additional intermolecular attractions, thereby both increasing the stresses necessary to cause cavitation, and at the same time reducing the absorption of non-polar liquids (S.N.3). [Pg.199]

Aciylonitrile has been an important organic intermediate sinee the 1930s, when it was nsed in a eopolymer for synthetic bntadiene rabbets in Germany. While Bnna-N was not as snccessful as the similar Bnna-S, made with styrene, aciylonitrile is now widely nsed in the prodnction of fibers, and ABS resins. Early prodnction rentes were based on the reaction of ethylene oxide or acetylene with... [Pg.156]

A use is for internally illuminated signs in which any color can be introduced. Its dii sional stability recommends it for many optical uses. Acrylics are modified by copoly-mf ition to improve impact strength at the loss their extreme transparency.. An example is aci -modified polyvinyl chloride sheet, which is tougher than aciylonitrile-butadiene-styrene and polycarbonate and is suitable for corrosion-resistant pans, aircraft parts and materia idling equipment. [Pg.281]

Fischer prepared poly(styrene-co-aciylonitrile) and polystyrene by stable free radical emulsion polymerization using 4-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1 -piper-idinyloxy with potassium peroxodisulfate at 120°C under elevated pressures. Polystyrene samples prepared in this manner had molecular weights of up to 35,000 daltons with polydispersities of less than 1.5. [Pg.515]

Aciylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) copolymer, an important rubber-toughened thermoplastic, is widely used owing to its favorable cost/performance ratio. The advantages of ABS include its luster and resistance to impact [1-2]. ABS is therefore used in various instruments and structures for small elemental parts as well as large structural ones. In spite of... [Pg.231]

Many hundreds of diene polymers were investigated for their suitability as elastomers. Only three of these have achieved widespread commercial acceptance butadiene-styrene copolyipers, butadiene-aciylonitrile copolymers, and poly-2-chlorobutadienes. Other essentially non-diene elastomers such as butyl rubber from isobutene, Thiokol from ethylene dihalides and polysulfides, and silicones have become important for special applications. [Pg.1028]

There is an important categoiy of free-radical emulsion polymerizations where the hydrophobic polymer does not dissolve in its own monomer [3-6] or is only sparingly soluble in its own monomer [3]. Some examples of these kinds of polymerizations are the emulsion polymerization of fluorinated monomers (e.g. tetrafluoroethylene (TFE), chlorotrifluoroethylene (CTFE), 1,2-difluoroethylene) [4,5] and acrylonitrile [6]. The polymers formed by these polymerizations all have significant industrial importance, particularly as engineering polymers (e.g. Teflon, aciylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer (ABS)). As a result much of the research into these processes remains outside the public domain. [Pg.802]
