The propylene-based chemicals, n- and isobutanol and 2-ethyl-1-hexanol [104-76-7] (2-EH) dominate the product spectmm. These chemicals represent 71% of the world s total oxo chemical capacity. In much of the developed world, plasticizers (qv), long based on 2-EH, are more often and more frequendy higher molecular weight, less volatile Cg, and C q alcohols such as isononyl alcohol, from dimerized normal butenes isodecanol, from propylene trimer and 2-propyl-1-heptanol, from / -butenes and aldol addition. The isolated dimethyl sebacate can be sold commercially as is or optionally hydrolyzed to sebacic acid. If a higher molecular weight plasticizer diester is required, a transesterification with -ethyl hexanol, for example, gives the desired product plus two equivalents of methanol which is recycled back to the oxycarbonylation reaction. If the free acid is desired, dimethyl sebacate hydrolysis to sebacic acid is carried out using a strong mineral acid such as sulfuric acid. Heat-setting resins cannot be plasticized by low molecular weight plasticizers. Polyvinyl acetals have been claimed for these products. American Cyanamid Co. has suggested polyvinyl acetals or butyrals in an amount of 10 to 25% of the resin for urea and melamine resins. For varnishes and adhesives, combinations of phenolic resins and polyvinyl formal are recommended. Polyvinyl acetals with higher alkyl radicals are suitable for cellulose esters and improve elasticity as well as resistance against water. [Pg.100]

Diluents have much lower vapor pressures and generally do not evaporate at ambient conditions. However, they do have a finite vapor pressure, and given the right set of conditions (time, temperature, and pressure) they will vaporize. Two distinct classes of diluents are used with epoxy resins nonreactive diluents and reactive diluents. Reactive diluents will enter into the crosslinking reaction with the primary resin, and nonreactive diluents will not. Ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) polymers (containing 65%-70% by weight of vinyl acetate) are of industrial interest as high-molecular weight plasticizers for PVC, mainly because of their low cost. A polymeric plasticizer PB-3041 available from Du Pont allows the preparation of a highly permanent plasticized PVC formulation. It is believed to be a terpolymer of ethylene, vinyl, acetate, and carbon monoxide.
