Chemical-grade limestone is a pure type of high calcium or dolomitic limestone used by the chemical-process industry or where exacting chemical requirements ate necessary. It contains a minimum of 95% total carbonate. In a few areas of the United States this minimum may be extended to 97 or 98%. [Pg.163]

Total carbon in beryUium is determined by combustion of the sample, along with an accelerator mixture of tin, iron, and copper, in a stream of oxygen (15,16). The evolved carbon dioxide is usuaUy measured by infrared absorption spectrometry. BeryUium carbide can be determined without interference from graphitic carbon by dissolution of the sample in a strong base. BeryUium carbide is converted to methane, which can be determined directly by gas chromatography. The first commercial oil-fumace process was put into operation in 1943 by the Phillips Petroleum Co. in Borger, Texas. The total salt concentration can vary by a factor of 10-100 with depth in the same borehole as a consequence of the presence of strata with relict sea water. Pockets with such water seem to be common in Scandinavian granite at >100 m depth. In Figure 2 the solubility and speciation of plutonium have been calculated, using stability data for the hydroxy and carbonate complexes in Table III and standard potentials from Table IV, for the waters indicted in Figure 2. Here, the various carbonate concentrations would correspond to an open system in equilibrium with air (b) and closed systems with a total carbonate concentration of 30 mg/liter (c,e) and 485 mg/liter (d,f), respectively. The two redox potentials would roughly correspond to water in equilibrium wit air (a-d cf 50) and systems buffered by an Fe(III)(s)/Fe(II)(s)-equilibrium (e,f), respectively. Sodium a-sulfonated fatty acid esters of long-chain alcohols have a structural effect on the Krafft point different from that of amphiphiles with short alkyl chains [60]. In a series of homologs with the same total carbon number the Krafft points are highest when the hydrophilic alkyl chain lengths in the a-sulfonated fatty acid and the alcohol are fairly long and equal.
