Paint coating

The most important industrial use of pentaerythritol is in a wide variety of paints, coatings, and varnishes, where the cross-linking capabiUty of the four hydroxy groups is critical. Alkyd resins (qv) are produced by reaction of pentaerythritol with organic acids such as phthaUc acid or maleic acid and natural oil species. 

Abrasion Resistance. Porcelain enamel is the most scratch resistant and hardest of commercial coatings (see Hardness). This property is used to distinguish between porcelain enamel and organic enamel or painted coatings. The rate of abrasive wear in surface abrasion increases with time, and the subsurface abrasion which follows exhibits a higher, but constant rate of wear. Abrasion resistance can be evaluated by loss of gloss or weight (35). 

Perhaps the most useful application of ISS stems from its ability to monitor very precisely the concentration and thickness of contaminants on metals during development of optimum processing and cleaning operations. The introduction of rfpowered sources has extended the capability of GD-OES to non-conductors, and several rf sources of different design have become commercially available. This is of the greatest importance for surface and depth-profile analysis, because there exists a multitude of technically and industrially important non-conductive coating materials (e. g. painted coatings and glasses) which are extremely difficult to analyze by any other technique. 

An example of the contribution of polar interactions between an acrylic PSA and a substrate is shown in Fig. 6. By copolymerizing iso-octylacrylate and acrylic acid, using a monomer ratio of, respectively, 95/5 and 90/10, two otherwise identical PSAs were made. The PSAs were laminated to both sides of a foam core to make an attachment tape as used in the automotive industry for the application of body side moldings to a car. One side of the foam tape was laminated against an aluminum foil backing. The other side was laminated against an automotive paint-coated panel to make the final test sample. The normal visible deterioration of a paint coating is by the appearance of chalking on its surface. Chalking is the term used to denote the powdery material that appears as the binder slowly disintegrates and exposes the pigments. 

Most pigments can be used in any type of binder therefore, paints cannot be identified by pigment type alone. For example, micaceous iron oxide pigment is traditionally in an oil-based binder but is being increasingly used in epoxies, etc. In the paint coating film, the pigment content may vary from 15 to 60 per cent. In the special case of zinc rich primers, it is over 90 per cent.
