Total carbon catalytic combustion

A flame-ionization, total hydrocarbon analyzer determines the THC, and the total carbon content is calculated as methane. Other methods include catalytic combustion to carbon dioxide, which may be deterrnined by a sensitive infrared detector of the nondispersive type. Hydrocarbons other than methane and acetylene are present only in minute quantities and generally are inert in most appHcations. [Pg.480]

The anode exhaust gas is mixed with air, and the nonoxidized components are totally oxidized in a catalytic combustion chamber. Because air is fed in excess, the exhaust gas from the burner still contains a significant amount of oxygen. This gas is then fed to the cathode channel where the electrochemical reduction of oxygen takes place. There, new carbonate ions are produced from carbon dioxide and oxygen according to the backward direction of the following cathode reaction ... [Pg.49]

Measurements of the total carbon content (TC) of water, which consists of 1C and TOC (TC = IC-i-TOC), are usually based on the catalytic combustion of the water sample in the presence of oxygen to yield the TC value. Alternatively, the determination of TOC is possible by a photochemical method, i.e. the VUV-initiated oxidation of organic matter in the low pg L concentration range with formation of CO2 (Huber and Frimmel, 1991). The CO2 resulting from both procedures is analyzed quantitatively in a nondispersive infrared analyzer (NDIR). [Pg.110]

Total Organic Carbon (TOC) Combustion catalytic oxidation, combustion oxidation, photochemical oxidation, ozonation oxidation... [Pg.85]

Total organic carbon (TOC) analysis is based on the principle that carbon in an aqueous sample is converted to carbon dioxide by catalytic combustion or wet chemical oxidation. The carbon dioxide formed is measured directly by an infrared detector or converted to methane and measured by a flame ionization detector. The amount of carbon dioxide or methane is directly proportional to the concentration of carbonaceous material in the sample. Inorganic carbon is removed by acidification of the sample prior to analysis. [Pg.5044]

It has been published that hydrophobic-activated carbons can be suitable supports for noble metal species active for total oxidation. The catalytic behaviour of platinum and palladium supported on carbon-based monoUths was studied in the low temperature catalytic combustion of benzene, toluene and m-xylene, and compared with the corresponding behaviour of Pt-supported on y-Al203 coated monoliths. Carbon-based monoliths showed much better catalytic performance, which was ascribed to the fact that the carbon surface is more hydrophobic than the y-Al203, and the poisoning effect of water molecules produced during the combustion was... [Pg.75]

Veser and Schmidt studied the catalytic and homogeneous ignition and the homogeneous extinction behaviour of lower alkanes and alkenes ]428]. Platinum foil was used as the catalyst The surface ignition temperature decreased with increasing number of carbon atoms in the fuel and with increasing modified equivalence ratio 0, which was derived from the equivalence ratio. The latter is defined as the ratio of vol.% air to vol.% fuel in the feed normalised by the ratio required for total combustion ... [Pg.178]
