Poly (vinyl chloride) fibers (PVC) [96, pp. 642-645], are characterized by their flame retardance. They are dyed preferably with disperse dyes [50, p. 404], [6, pp. 611], As with modacrylic fibers, high temperatures must not be used because of shrinkage of the PVC fiber. Hence, some fibers are dyed at 60-65 °C with dyeing accelerants. Other PVC fibers can be dyed at 100°C without a carrier and a few even at 110°C. Dyes must be selected with regard to the lightfastness desired. [Pg.411]

Fritted glass crucibles cannot withstand high temperatures and, therefore, should only be dried in an oven at temperatures below 200 °G. The glass fiber mats used in Gooch crucibles can be heated to a maximum temperature of approximately 500 °G. [Pg.245]

The mats are moved along the line to the press loader. When the loader is filled and the press opens to remove the load of freshly pressed boards, the loader pushes the new boards into the unloader and deposits the load of mats on the press platens. The press closes as quickly as possible to the desired panel thickness. More pressure, as much as 4.8—6.9 MPa (700—1000 psi) is required to press high density dry-process hardboard, because the dry fiber exhibits much more resistance to compression and densification than wet fiber. Press temperatures are also higher, in the range of 220—246°C. No screens are used in the dry-process, but the moisture in the mats requires a breathe cycle during pressing to avoid blowing the boards apart at the end of the cycle. Because no screens are used, the products are called smooth-two-sides (S-2-S), in contrast to the wet-process boards, which have a screen pattern embossed into the back side and are known as smooth-one-side (S-l-S). [Pg.389]

Polyimides for use ia molded products and high temperature films can be produced by the reaction of pyromelHtic dianhydride [89-32-7] and 4,4 -diaminodiphenyl ether [13174-32-8] ia DMAC to form a polyamide that can be converted iato a polyimide (13). DMAC can also be used as a spinning solvent for polyimides. AdditionaUy, polymers containing over 50% vinyHdene chloride are soluble up to 20% at elevated temperatures ia DMAC. Pulp-like olefin fibers are produced by a high pressure spurting process developed by Hercules Inc. and Solvay, Inc. Polypropylene or polyethylene is dissolved in volatile solvents at high temperature and pressure. After the solution is released, the solvent is volatilised, and the polymer expands into a highly fluffed, pulp-like product. Additives are included to modify the surface characteristics of the pulp. Uses include felted fabrics, substitution in whole or in part for wood pulp in papermaking, and replacement of asbestos in reinforcing appHcations (56). [Pg.320]

Chemical Properties. The hydrolysis of PET is acid- or base-catalyzed and is highly temperature dependent and relatively rapid at polymer melt temperatures. Treatment for several weeks in 70°C water results in no significant fiber strength loss. However, at 100°C, approximately 20% of the PET tenacity is lost in one week and about 60% is lost in three weeks (47). In general, the hydrolysis and chemical resistance of copolyester materials is less than that for PET and depends on both the type and amount of comonomer. [Pg.326]

The Courtaulds semicommercial production system is iUustrated in Figure 8. Dissolving-grade woodpulp is mixed into a paste with NMMO and passes through a high temperature dissolving unit to yield a clear viscous solution. This is filtered and spun into dilute NMMO whereupon the ceUulose fibers precipitate. These are washed and dried, and finally baled as staple or tow products as required by the market. The spin bath and wash Uquors are passed to solvent recovery systems which concentrate the NMMO to the level required for reuse in dissolution. [Pg.352]

Fiber-reiaforced panels covered with PVF have been used for greenhouses. Transparent PVF film is used as the cover for flat-plate solar collectors (114) and photovoltaic cells (qv) (115). White PVF pigmented film is used as the bottom surface of photovoltaic cells. Nonadhering film is used as a release sheet ia plastics processiag, particularly ia high temperature pressing of epoxy resias for circuit boards (116—118) and aerospace parts. Continuous recuperative furnaces employing metallic recuperators (heat exchangers) have been in use since the 1940s. Operation of these furnaces is simplified and the combustion process is more precisely controlled no reversal of air flow causes temperature variations. The recuperator metal must be caretiiUy selected because of chemical attack at high temperature. Recuperative furnaces are often used in the production of textile fiber glass because they maintain a constant temperature. [Pg.306]

Polyimides (PI) were among the eadiest candidates in the field of thermally stable polymers. In addition to high temperature property retention, these materials also exhibit chemical resistance and relative ease of synthesis and use. This has led to numerous innovations in the chemistry of synthesis and cure mechanisms, stmcture variations, and ultimately products and appHcations. Polyimides (qv) are available as films, fibers, enamels or varnishes, adhesives, matrix resins for composites, and mol ding powders. They are used in numerous commercial and military aircraft as stmctural composites, eg, over a ton of polyimide film is presently used on the NASA shuttle orbiter. When pure needle-like crystals of -aminobenzoyl chloride are polymerized in a high temperature, nonsolvent process, or alow temperature, slurry process, polymer is obtained which maintains the needle-like appearance of monomer. PBA of inherent viscosity, 4.1 dL/g, has been obtained in a hexane slurry with pyridine as the acid acceptor. Poly(2,2 -(y -phenylene)-5,5 -bisbenzimidazole) [25734-65-0] is a textile fiber marketed by Hoechst-Celanese (11) which does not form Hquid crystalline solutions due to its bent meta backbone monomeric component.
