The analysis scheme implemented at the Cos Cob site used three sets of tools hand-held test kits, an on-site mobile laboratory equipped with gas chromatograph/ electron capture detector (GC/ECD) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and an off-site laboratory with rapid turnaround capabilities (<48 h for virtually all analyses). By implementing all of these tools at the same time, the project eliminated the need for multiple sampling events and allowed the team to perform additional real-time sampling, enabling the team to delineate the extent of potential hot spots quickly.

LVHV nozzles require very careful design. They can be effective in capturing and removing dust from operations that are otherwise difficult to control, e.g., hand-held tools and some fixed-machine grinding and other operations. Research has been conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of several LVHV nozzle configurations for capturing tracer aerosols for simulated industrial operations.Studies have been conducted to evaluate dust capture for LVHV nozzles on hand-held tools, and have demonstrated over 90% collection efficiencies for operations such as grinding and sanding.

Commercial products do exist that integrate shrouded and ventilated grinding wheels and other hand-held tools. It may be possible to find an existing LVHV-type product that will work well for some applications, requiring only to be connected to an appropriate air handling system. However, it is also sometimes necessary to make custom-fabricated LVHV nozzles for some hand-held tools and for essentially all fixed-machine dust-generating tools. Application of the test substance to the test system is without doubt the most critical step of the residue field trial. Under-application may be corrected, if possible and if approved by the Study Director, by making a follow-up application if the error becomes known shortly after the application has been made. Over-application errors can usually only be corrected by starting the trial again. The Study Director must be contacted as soon as an error of this nature is detected. Immediate communication allows for the most feasible options to be considered in resolving the error. If application errors are not detected at the time of the application, the samples from such a trial can easily become the source of undesirable variability when the final analysis results are known. Because the application is critical, the PI must calculate and verify the data that will constitute the application information for the trial. If the test substance weight, the spray volume, the delivery rate, the size of the plot, and the travel speed for the application are carefully determined and then validated prior to the application, problems will seldom arise. With the advent of new tools such as computers and hand-held calculators, the errors traditionally associated with applications to small plot trials should be minimized in the future. The following paragraphs outline some of the important considerations for each of the phases of the application. 

Personal digital assistants (also called electronic organizers) cost more money, between 50 and 1,000, because they re essentially hand-held computers. PDAs have built-in electronic scheduling programs, address books, to-do lists, and some even have word processors or text editors, all packed into a hand-held unit that can be taken anywhere. PDAs are ideal tools for people looking for a job, because they can hold vast amounts of information in an organized manner. 

Cleaning by hand tools is the oldest process. Today this is employed only when power tools are not available and where the surface is inaccessible to power tools and too small. The generally used hand tools are wire brush, scraper blades and chipping hammer and emery or sand paper. Hand held electric or pneumatic power tools for cleaning include sanders, pneumatic scalers, needle gun and rotary steel brushes. 

Stitching - A method of joining two pieces of uncured rubber compound together by means of a stitching roller, and a hand held tool comprised of a wheel with a narrow edge which is often serrated. It is commonly used to make tank lining joints. 

The present chapter reviews recent research efforts aimed at developing new devices for in situ and on-site electrochemical stripping analysis of trace metals. It is not a comprehensive review, but rather focuses on new tools for decentralized metal testing, including remotely deployed submersible stripping probes, hand-held metal analyzers coupled with disposable microfabricated strips, and newly developed green bismuth film sensors.

Currently, hand-held probes, metal detectors, trained dogs, and mechanical breaching equipment are considered the most effective tools to detect and/or clear landmines and other UXO. These methods are slow, costly, and labor-intensive. They mainly find landmines at or near the surface, although some metal detectors can find larger, more deeply buried UXO items because of their greater metal content. 

The Testmate is a hand-held instrument designed to rapidly assess the acetylcholinesterase level in blood samples. Fluctuations in the acetylcholinesterase level may indicate potential exposure to nerve agent. The Testmate can be utilized prior to deployments to determine baseline levels so potential exposures are better quantified. It is also used in the field as a rapid assessment tool for potential nerve agent exposure. Results from a sample can determine whether or not further investigations are needed. It recently received FDA approval. Two units have been fielded to the TAML. 

Hand-held equipments are usually light-weight tools such as drilling machines, sanding machines etc., that are held in one or both hands. 

Before discussing Treib s scheme, it is worth remembering that in his day, there were none of the sophisticated spectroscopic tools that chemists take for granted these days, such as UV-visible and mass spectroscopy.
