Delumyea and McCleary report data for the determination of %w/w organic material in sediment samples collected at different depths from a cove on the St. Johns River in Jacksonville, FL. Sediment pollution. The concentrations of pollutants in the dated sediment cores have been determined in our laboratory by atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS). Donazzolo et al. (15) and Pavoni et al. (16) reported mainly heavy metal concentrations. Marcomini et al. (17) and Pavoni et al. In random samples of soil taken from five Alabama counties, only 3 of 46 soil samples contained methyl parathion. The concentration in these samples was <0.1 ppm (Albright et al. 1974). Aspartofthe National Soils Monitoring Program, soil and crop samples from 37 states were analyzed for methyl parathion during 1972. Methyl parathion was detected in only 1 soil sample, at a concentration of <0.1 ppm and taken from South Dakota, out of 1,246 total samples taken from the 37 states (Carey et al. 1979). In soil and sediment samples collected from a watershed area in Mississippi, methyl parathion was not detected in the soil samples. In three wetland sediment cores, however, measurable concentrations of methyl parathion were detected during application season (Cooper 1991). [Pg.159]

The anaerobic dechlorination of PCBs has been extensively studied both in microcosms and in field samples from heavily contaminated sites in the United States. Three main patterns have been fonnd—N that removed flanked meto-chlorines, P that removed para-chlorines, and LP that removed nnflanked para-chlorines (Bedard et al. 1998). By contrast, ort/to-chlorines were more recalcitrant. These experiments, which have been discussed in Chapter 9, Part 2, laid the fonndation for analysis of a field situation and an appreciation of the effect of long-term exposnre of contaminated lake sediment (Magar et al. 2005a,b). Substantial dechlorination took place in buried sediment cores (35-40 cm) compared with the snrface sediment cores (0-5 cm). The method above, however, is not suitable when one needs a precise study of the vertical distribution of pesticides. Generally, the concentration of pesticides in paddy sediment is highest at the surface. Special care is required to avoid contamination with surface soil when the sediment is collected. The sediment core should be collected in two stages. First, a pipe with a diameter greater than that of the core sampler is inserted in the sediment and then water inside the pipe is removed gently with a syringe, pipet, etc. Next, a layer of surface soil (1-3 cm) is taken with a spatula or a trowel and then subsurface soil is collected with a core sampler to the desired depth see also Figure 4. [Pg.900]
