Hand-held equipment

The vortex exhaust has a geometry that generates a rotating flow behind the opening. It is suitable for installation in a narrow space and it is traditionally used with hand-held equipment producing jets of air and particles. This type of exhaust opening is also called a tornado exhaust or a cyclone exhaust. 

In addition, there are hand-held psychrometers for measuring air temperature and relative humidity available, and also hand-held wind meters, which measure wind speed. When using such hand-held equipment, readings should be taken each hour during the course of the day when worker exposure volunteers or re-entry worker volunteers are performing the test. 

ERM methods give a direct measure of metal penetration but can be of low accuracy, especially in slow-moving cooling systems, thus requiring long periods of measurement. As a result, for most systems the probes are permanently installed and the multichannel monitor transmits data directly to a control room computer, although hand-held equipment has become available in recent years. 

Keen visual observation is the most important task during a site reconnaissance. Flowever, some basic in-held chemical testing equipment is useful. Commercial kits are available, mainly based on colorimetric reactions. These kits can be used to check for the presence or absence of common contaminants and to measure soil pH. However, the results obtained using these test kits should only be regarded as qualitative, not least because samples taken at the surface may not represent the bulk of materials on the site. For site reconnaissance, the use of in-held instrumental testing is not justihed. An exception is hand-held equipment to test for the presence of gaseous and volatile contamination—photo-ionisation and other detectors are useful where such contaminants are anticipated. While a Phase la study does not normally include intrusive investigation, a small number of samples may be taken for laboratory analysis. These can be important when waste and other potentially contaminated materials of unknown composition have been spread, deposited or are stored on the site. 

Portable equipment is not necessarily hand-held equipment, it may be too heavy to carry or lift by one person. 

Hand-held equipments are usually light-weight tools such as drilling machines, sanding machines etc., that are held in one or both hands. 

The nominal time of 0.4 seconds is intended for circuits supplying socket outlets, regularly moved portable equipment and Class 1 hand-held equipment. For voltages (Vp ) different from 240 Vac, the disconnection time (fdis) of 0.4 seconds becomes approximately related as.

Automated processing equipment is possible, similar to the corona treaters. Hand-held equipment such as a torch or Bunsen burner can also be used, although uniform treatment is more dififlcult. The effect of additives on treatment efficiency is not as great as with corona treatment. 

For protection against both direct and indirect electric shock, the specified supply system is SELV, but the limit of 25 V a.c. or 60 V d.c. has been dropped. Where a functional earth is needed, for certain instruments for example, it may be utihsed provided all exposed and extraneous conductive parts are bonded together and to the protective conductor. Where there is no need for direct electric shock protection and only indirect is required, section 606-04-0 l(iii) allows mains voltage supplies to fixed equipment within the equipotential zone provided the exposed conductive parts are coimected to the extraneous conductive parts in the location. Alternatively, Class ff equipment may be used provided its enclosure is suitable for the location and it has sensitive RCD protection to trip the circuit at a residual current of 150 mA within 40 ms (or in a time of five times the residual operating current when the current is less than 30 mA). For hand-held equipment, portable tools and hand lamps, for example, there is no relaxation and they have to be supplied at SELV. 

In addition to the fixed installation, all other electrical equipment and apparatus used on the site should be included in the preventive maintenance programme. This will included portable electrical tools, handlamps, lighting equipment and so on. By far the most important element of this maintenance is a routine visual examination of the equipment, which will detect most faults that can lead to danger. These examinations should be carried out as pre-use user checks and then periodically as part of a formal visual inspection, typically at a frequency of once every week for 230 V hand-held equipment and extension leads, and monthly for 110 V equipment and fixed 230/400 V equipment. Guidance on the frequency of these examinations, and the frequency of tests aimed at detecting defects, is published in HSE s Guidance Note HS(G)141 and the lEE s Code of practice for in-service inspection and testing of electrical equipment.
