Lined Tanks

In some cases, particularly with iaactive metals, electrolytic cells are the primary method of manufacture of the fluoroborate solution. The manufacture of Sn, Pb, Cu, and Ni fluoroborates by electrolytic dissolution (87,88) is patented. A typical cell for continous production consists of a polyethylene-lined tank with tin anodes at the bottom and a mercury pool (ia a porous basket) cathode near the top (88). Pluoroboric acid is added to the cell and electrolysis is begun. As tin fluoroborate is generated, differences ia specific gravity cause the product to layer at the bottom of the cell. When the desired concentration is reached ia this layer, the heavy solution is drawn from the bottom and fresh HBP is added to the top of the cell continuously. The direct reaction of tin with HBP is slow but can be accelerated by passiag air or oxygen through the solution (89). The stannic fluoroborate is reduced by reaction with mossy tin under an iaert atmosphere. In earlier procedures, HBP reacted with hydrated stannous oxide. [Pg.168]

Liquid polyalurninum chloride is acidic and corrosive to common metals. Suitable materials for constmction of storage and handling facilities include synthetic mbber-lined steel, corrosion resistant fiber glass reinforced plastics (FRP), ceramics, tetrafluoroethylene polymer (PTFE), poly(vinyhdene fluoride) (PVDF), polyethylene, polypropylene, and poly(vinyl chloride) (PVG). Suitable shipping containers include mbber-lined tank tmcks and rail cars for bulk shipment and plastic-lined or aH-plastic dmms and tote bins for smaller quantities. Except for aluminum chlorohydrates, PAG products are shipped as hazardous substances because of their acidity. [Pg.180]

Benzyl chloride is available in both anhydrous and stabilized forms. Both forms can be shipped in glass carboys, nickel and lined-steel dmms, and nickel tank tmcks and tank cars. Stabilized benzyl chloride can be shipped in unlined and lacquer-lined dmms, and tank tmcks or cars of constmction other than nickel. Glass-lined tanks are the first choice for bulk storage of anhydrous benzyl chloride lead-lined, nickel, or ceramic tanks can also be used. [Pg.60]

Benzyl chloride is classified by DOT as chemicals NOIBN, poisonous, corrosive and a hazardous substance (100 lbs-45.45 kg). Benzal chloride is classified as poisonous and a hazardous substance (5000 lbs-2270 kg). Benzotrichloride is classified under DOT regulation as a corrosive Hquid NOS and a hazardous substance (10 lbs-4.5 kg). The Freight Classification Chemical NOI appHes. It is shipped in lacquer-lined steel dmms and nickel-lined tank trailers. Benzal chloride is handled in a similar fashion. [Pg.60]

Stainless steel or epoxy-lined tank cars and tank tmcks are recommended for shipping. Aluminum also has been used. The tank can be flushed with carbon dioxide before loading and blanketed with nitrogen after loading. Dmm shipments are recommended in epoxy-lined open-head dmms fitted with a bung. Dimer acids and their by-products contaminated with iron or copper show accelerated color deterioration. Exposure to these metals or their salts should be minimised. [Pg.116]

Plating T anks. An electroless plating line consists of a series of lead-lined (for plastics etching) or plastic-lined tanks equipped with filters and heaters, separated by rinse tanks (24). Most metal tanks, except for passivated stainless steel used for electroless nickel, cannot be used to hold electroless plating baths because the metal initiates electroless plating onto itself. Additional problems that may cause serious contamination of the treated MU water are those related to carryover and after-precipitation from external treatment processes. The slime is recovered and heated in a brick-lined tank to melt the sulfur.
