Water testing

An indication whether a water-insoluble compound is an acid or a phenol (or enol) will be obtained from the Solubihty Tests water-soluble acids will bberate carbon dioxide from 5 per cent, sodium bicarbonate solution see Section III,85,(i). ... [Pg.1071]

AATCC methods for determining water repeUency are AATCC 22 (spray test) and AATCC 70 (tumble jar dynamic absorption test). In the spray test, water is sprayed against the taut surface of the test specimen to produce a wetted pattern the size of which depends on the repeUency of the fabric. Evaluation is by comparing the pattern with a series of patterns on a standard chart. The latter method evaluates the percentage by weight of water absorbed by a sample after dynamic exposure to water for a specified period of time. [Pg.461]

A test water box was installed during a 2-week trial to monitor corrosion and fouling in a utility cooling water system. A baffle plate from the test box was removed after the test. Small, hollow incipient tubercles dotted surfaces (Fig. 3.28). Small amounts of carbonate were present atop and around each tubercle. Each tubercle capped a small depression no deeper than 0.005 in. (0.013 cm) (Fig. 3.29). This indicated local average corrosion rates were as high as 130 mihy (3.3 mm/y). [Pg.60]

Toxicity Test (Bioassay). Organisms representative of those to be protected are exposed to the test water under rigorously controlled conditions, usually in a laboratory environment. In this test the organisms, normally fish, are exposed for a standard time period in aquaria to various dilutions of waste or river water while some physiological parameter is carefully monitored to determine fish response. Behavior is also observed. [Pg.255]

We now have five remaining unknowns—Qm, pm, p, Lm and (AP)f— and only two remaining equations, so we still have three arbitrary choices. Of course, we will choose a pipe length for the model that is much less than the 700 miles in the field, but it only has to be much longer than its diameter to avoid end effects. Thus we can choose any convenient length that will fit into the lab (say 50 ft), which still leaves two arbitrary unknowns to specify. Since there are two fluid properties to specify (p and p), this means that we can choose (arbitrarily) any (Newtonian) fluid for the lab test. Water is the most convenient, available, and inexpensive fluid, and if we use it (p = 1 cP, p = 1 g/cm3) we will have used up all our arbitrary choices. The remaining two unknowns, Qm and (AP)f, are determined by the two remaining equations. From Eq. (2-12),... [Pg.34]

Six juvenile garter snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis and Thamnophis radix), three of each sex, were used in this study. The snakes were housed individually in ventilated plastic containers. During earthworm extract trailing and the foraging task snakes were fed earthworms only in the maze. During airborne delivery of odors and open field exploration snakes were fed earthworms once a week, just before a two day weekend during which they were not tested. Water was available ad libitum. [Pg.347]

M272 Water Testing Kit A lightweight portable kit used to detect and identify dangerous levels of common chemical warfare agents in raw and treated water in about seven minutes. It is a test water sampler and is not a continuous monitor. Each kit includes twenty-five tests for each agent. [Pg.322]

In the small-scale tests, water was jetted into the salt both from above and below the interface. Explosions were erratic with many tests simply producing water vapor which ejected the salt. In some tests, high-speed photography was employed and, at the highest framing speeds (13,000 fps), the explosion, if it occurred, took place within the time of a single frame, i.e., <77 ju,sec. No definitive conclusions were drawn except that, if an explosion did occur, it was very short in duration and rather destructive. [Pg.155]

The test organisms are exposed for 24, 48, and 96 hours to different concentrations of testing water. After the exposure period the number of dead organisms is counted. Each test sample container is examined and the number of dead organisms counted (looking for the absence of swimming movements). A test is regarded as valid if the mortality in the control is <10%. Toxicity is calculated as ... [Pg.24]

I tested the plasma ignition system in my 6.5hp 4-stroke engine with gasoline and propane (didn t test water yet). I used HV pulses from the original ignition coil as trigger or pilot sparks. I had to reverse the polarities of the bridge rectifier, two diodes and the capacitor to get a better pilot spark. The schematic and details are ... [Pg.29]
