System control and data acquisition

System control and data acquisition are done with a personal computer using Paragon software. About 150 input and output modules were used for the two laboratory cells. This is expensive and may seem excessive, but a lot of the inputs and outputs are used for safety purposes so that the cell can operate unattended 24 hr a day, 7 days a week to get good long-term data. [Pg.538]

Sophisticated computer-based data monitoring systems may be installed, with which preventive maintenance is planned by trend logging (This type of system is commonly referred to as a building management system (BMS), building automation system (BAS) or system control and data acquisition (SCADA) system.)... [Pg.72]

Four main units are used in the IMCS, which are the motor control unit (MCU), the feeder control unit (FCU), the circuit breaker control unit (CBCU) and the central control unit (CCU). A MCU is a microprocessor (micro-computer) based module which has integrated control, monitoring, protection functions, and a communication interface for the motor starter. An FCU is very similar to a MCU and interfaces communication for the plain feeder contactor or circuit breaker. A CBCU is also similar to a MCU but is used for incomers, interconnectors and busbar section circuit breakers. A CCU provides the facility to communicate simultaneously with MCUs, FCUs, CBCU, a distributed control system (DCS), system control and data acquisition (SCADA) and other digital information systems. Other discrete devices such as special protective relays can also be addressed by the CCU provided the software and porting systems are compatible. [Pg.160]

Each contemporary hplc instrument consists of a pump for solvent delivery, an injector device for sample introduction, column(s) for sample separation, detec-tor(s) for visualization of the separated components (solutes), and a computer for system control and data acquisition and reduction, as depicted in Figure 1. Precise temperature control of columns and some other parts of a chromatographic system becomes an important prerequisite for a successful separation. [Pg.1300]

The chromatography BIOS(CBIOS) concept allows system control and data acquisition under one platform. On the CBIOS driver level, general chromatography commands, for example, a NaOH gradient, are converted to system-specific commands. The concept works bidirectionally, that is, the instruments are under direct control and give positive feedback, so the user is continuously informed about the status of a single module or the complete system. [Pg.942]

Along the corridor of the power line, a system control and data acquisition (SCADA) or instrumentation line is run back to the main control station. Telephone wires or fiber optics are used to monitor remote start or shut pumps and valves. The computer system that monitors the local control may be programmable local controller (PTC) based. The centralized control room is usually called the distributed control system (DCS). SCADA controlled systems are designed to include ... [Pg.587]

Plants with system control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems may adjust chemical dosage automatically. The SCADA system communicates the feed setting to the feed equipment to achieve the needed chemical dosage. These systems also offer manual feed equipment control to achieve needed dosage changes. In either case, the dosage is determined first, and then the equipment is adjusted to dehver the correct amount of chemical to match the volume of water being treated (fiow). [Pg.11]

The SIMULAR, developed by Hazard Evaluation Laboratory Ltd., is a chemical reactor control and data acquisition system. It can also perform calorimetry measurements and be employed to investigate chemical reaction and unit operations such as mixing, blending, crystallization, and distillation. Ligure 12-24 shows a schematic detail of the SIMULAR, and Ligure 12-25 illustrates the SIMULAR reaction calorimeter with computer controlled solids addition. [Pg.946]

With the dispersive IR instrument, it is important to use computer control and data acquisition. For conventional experiments also, the attractiveness of such a system has been pointed out by Peri (24). [Pg.8]

A microcomputer based control and data acquisition system is required to monitor the 10 thermocouples in the sample and to control the heater temperature. For the latter, the rate of change of the thermocouple in the slab was used and power to the cartridge heaters varied. Details are given by Duever (3) and in a WCPD report (4). [Pg.316]

Control of the field occurs on two levels. The upper level Is the supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system whose main responsibility is well flow rate control, well testing, production allocation, accounting and general field monitoring. The SCADA system is operated from the Main Operations Center (MOC) which is remote from all three GCs. The second level of control is process control in the individual GCs. Flow to the GCs Is normally controlled by the SCADA system (HOC operator), but the GC operator can override and control well flow rates in case of SCADA system failure or other unusual circumstances. The GC operator and the MOC operator communicate via a dedicated telephone connection. [Pg.56]

Since the operation is in an arctic environment, achieving the above objectives presents particular problems and would be difficult and Inefficient using the more conventional approaches. Therefore, as part of the original facilities a "supervisory control and data acquisition" (SCADA) system was Installed in the VfOA. The operational philosophy is one where, by means of the SCADA system, the functions necessary for reservoir management and production control could be monitored and controlled from a central location called the Main Operations Center [Pg.57]

The original WOA supervisory control and data acquisition system was configured around the Honeywell HS4400 process computer. Two 4400s in dual redundant processor configuration were installed with automatic failover to the standby should the online unit fail. Each 4400 has 96K of 24-bit word magnetic core memory and a 1.3 million word drum. [Pg.57]

The crude oil delivery system starts with relatively small-diameter gathering lines from individual producing wells to a main-line pump station, from where it is pumped through a larger transmission trunkline to a refinery or other destination. At the refinery, the cmde oil is separated into gasoline, jet fuel, kerosene, distillate fuel oil, etc, and the refined products are transported by products pipelines to markets, storage, shipping terminals, etc. In modem lines, all inputs and outputs are metered, monitored, and remotely controlled by supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) computer systems. [Pg.47]

Microprocessor-based control systems are marketed under a variety of acronyms and not all will be true DCCSs. Of particular note are the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems which form an increasingly central part of the operations of many industries (e.g. offshore oil and gas platforms, petrochemical complexes, pulp and paper works). SCADA describes a communications system whose principal function is to join instrumentation and control into a cohesive package(57) and, particularly, the supervision and management of remote ... [Pg.708]

The control system of the freeze-drying unit provides control, monitoring and documentation of the process. Such a system must be reliable and comply with GM P and GAMP (Good Automation Manufacturing Practice) demands with respect to computer validation. It should be SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) compatible. A possible hardware architecture is shown in Figure 2.55.1. [Pg.222]
