Another feature in PES spectra is the so-called shake-up structures, appearing as weak satellites on the high binding energy side of the main line. The shake-up structure reflects the spectrum of the 1 -electron-2-hole states generated in connection with pholoionization, and can give useful information about the valence n-electronic structure of a molecular ion. 

By measuring the relative intensities of satellite and main lines, the population ratio is obtained, if it can be assumed that the dipole moment and line strength is not appreciably different in the two cases. One main line of future research could be in the inhibitory/activating effect on key enzymes involved in the pathogenesis of arteriosclerosis. A good knot for tying a branch line to a main line is the girth hitch with an extra turn around the main line (see Figure 5). The knot should be pulled up snugly and the branch line extended at 90 .
