The term gathering station may describe anything from a very simple gathering and pumping station to a complex processing centre in which produced fluids are treated and separated into gas, NGLs and stabilised crude.

In 1984, an explosion in a water pumping station at Abbeystead, UK, killed 16 people, most of them local residents who were visiting the plant. Water was pumped from one river to another through a tunnel. When pumping was stopped, some water was allowed to drain out of the tunnel and leave a void. Methane from the rocks below accumulated in the void and, when pumping was restarted, was pushed through vent valves into a valvehouse, where it exploded [18J. 

Pumping stations are often unattended and may be remotely controlled by radio or telephone circuits. 

In this procedure, increasing the supply temperature is considered to reduce the investment cost for the distribution system and electrical energy required for pumping stations. However, this change increases heat losses in the distribution network.
