Soft paraffin

Vaseline A trade name for soft paraffin. Yellow and white semi-solid, partly translucent mixtures of hydrocarbons of the paraffin series ranging from CijHji to C2oH42- Obtained from the high-boiling fractions of petroleum... [Pg.418]

Disclosing waxes include soft paraffins, petrolatums, coconut oil, zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, and suitable dyes. [Pg.480]

Eye ointments are prepared in a semi-sohd base (e.g. Simple Eye Ointment BP, which consists of yellow soft paraffin, eight parts hqnid paraffin, one part wool fat, one part). The base is filtered when molten to remove particles and sterilized at 160°C for 2 hours. The drug is incorporated prior to sterilization if heat stable, or added aseptically to the sterile base. Finally, the prodnct is aseptically packed in clear sterile alumirtinm or plastic tnbes. Since the prodnct contains virtnally no water, the danger of bacteria proliferating in the ointment is neghgible. Therefore, there is no recommended maximum period during which they can be nsed. [Pg.418]

Simone and Popino have considered the stability of neomycin in both hydrophobic and hydrophilic ointment bases. No loss of potency over a period of 1 year at 20°C was reported for formulations containing carboxymethylcellulose, polyethylene glycol(P.E.G.) or white-soft paraffin. However, formulations containing hydrous lanolin were reported to be unstable. All materials used in the formulations were obtained from U.S. sources. Coates et al3°l investigated the use of P.E.G. from British sources and described neomycin as being incompatible with the materials tested. [Pg.425]

Second, dead lambs were smeared with neatsfoot oil (an oil obtained by boiling feet and leg bones of cattle), left with the mother for 2-18 hours and then substituted by neatsfoot oil-treated foster lambs. Here 91% were accepted. The best acceptance rate (100%), however, was achieved by draping the skin of the dead lamb over the alien one. This is the method of choice because it is not only most effective but also saves labor as no treatment is necessaiy (Alexander eta/., 1987). Ewes accept alien lambs if they are rubbed with non-polar oils such as white soft paraffin or liquid paraffin. Polar materials such as polyethylene glycol, glycerol silicone, or diisooctyl phthalate have no effect. Ewes appear to use non-polar volatiles for discrimination (Alexander etal., 1989). [Pg.409]

SLACK. 1. Descriptive of a soft paraffin was resulting from the incomplete pressing of the settlings from the petroleum distillate. Though it has some applications in this form, it is actually an intermediate product between die liquid distillate and the scale wax made by expressing more of the oil. [Pg.1484]

Dry a portion of urine or vomit, and fuse with calcium hydroxide. Add 0.2 g of purified sand and transfer to a lead dish. Smear a film of soft paraffin on the reverse of a glass cover plate, and expose part of the glass by making an identifiable sign on die paraffin film. Add 5 ml of sulphuric acid to the dish, place the cover plate on it widi die paraffin layer on the inside, and heat gently for 20 minutes. Remove the paraffin film from the cover plate. An etched mark on the plate, corresponding to the mark made, indicates the presence of fluoride. [Pg.66]

White soft paraffin and yellow soft paraffin are mixtures of semi-solid hydrocarbons. They are used as bases for ointments, as emollients in skin diseases, and as lubricants in treating dry eyes. Soft paraffin is also known as petroleum jelly, petrolatum, and Vaseline. [Pg.2693]

Although soft paraffin has been used to treat irritant contact dermatitis (17) and to protect the skin from other sensitizers (18), hypersensitivity reactions can occur, but are rare (19-26). Yellow soft paraffin is slightly more antigenic than white soft paraffin (24). Contact sensitization to a neat cutting oil containing chlorinated paraffin occurred in 12 men (27). Contact urticaria mimicking dermatitis has also been reported (28). [Pg.2693]

Sensitization to soft paraffins can cause false-positive drug patch tests (29). [Pg.2693]

Lanolin may be used as a hydrophobic vehicle and in the preparation of water-in-oil creams and ointments. When mixed with suitable vegetable oils or with soft paraffin, it produces emollient creams that penetrate the skin and hence facilitate the absorption of drugs. Lanolin mixes with about twice its own weight of water, without separation, to produce stable emulsions that do not readily become rancid on storage. [Pg.399]

Anionic emulsifying wax (3-30%) may also be mixed with soft and liquid paraffins to prepare anhydrous ointment bases such as emulsifying ointment BP. A preparation of 80% anionic emulsifying wax in white soft paraffin has been used as a soap substitute in the treatment of eczema. [Pg.807]
