Diisooctyl phthalate

Plasticizers are relatively nonvolatile liquids which are blended with polymers to alter their properties by intrusion between polymer chains. Diisooctyl phthalate is a common plasticizer. A plasticizer must be compatible with the polymer to avoid bleeding out over long periods of time. Products containing plasticizers tend to be more flexible and workable. 

The and C q iso-phthalates (DINP and DIDP) generally compete with DEHP as commodity general-purpose plasticizers. Other iso-phthalates are available at opposite ends of the carbon number range (eg, diisoheptyl phthalate (DIHP), C, and diisotridecyl phthalate (DTDP), but these serve more speciaUty markets. The Cg iso-phthalate, diisooctyl phthalate (DIOP), has also had traditional sales ia the commodity plasticizer markets where it is seen as an equivalent to DEHP.

Second, dead lambs were smeared with neatsfoot oil (an oil obtained by boiling feet and leg bones of cattle), left with the mother for 2-18 hours and then substituted by neatsfoot oil-treated foster lambs. Here 91% were accepted. The best acceptance rate (100%), however, was achieved by draping the skin of the dead lamb over the alien one. This is the method of choice because it is not only most effective but also saves labor as no treatment is necessaiy (Alexander eta/., 1987). Ewes accept alien lambs if they are rubbed with non-polar oils such as white soft paraffin or liquid paraffin. Polar materials such as polyethylene glycol, glycerol silicone, or diisooctyl phthalate have no effect. Ewes appear to use non-polar volatiles for discrimination (Alexander etal., 1989). 

Figure 11 indicates the differences between three different chemical types of plasticizers. A comparison has been made between a commercial trixylyl phosphate (TXP), diisooctyl phthalate (DiOP) and diisooctyl sebacate (DiOS). It is apparent that all three points increase from TXP to DiOP to DiOS. The DiOS is at 50 p.h.r. since at 75 p.h.r. the film would be very low in tensile strength. 

Primary plasticizers may be further subdivided. The phthalate types me by far the most popular due to cost and ease of incorporation. Dioctyl phthalate and diisooctyl phthalate are typical of this class, They exhibit good general -purpose properties. Phosphate plasticizers are also important for general-purpose use. Typical of these are tritolyl phosphate and trixylenyl phosphate. These plasticizers also impart fire retardant properties.
