Monarkite. Brit permitted mining expl contg typically NG 12.0, AN 4.97, Na chloride 24.5, Na nitrate 7.5, starch 4.0, mineral jelly 2.0, and collodion cotton 0.3%. Its charge limit is 26oz, and power by BalPend is 2.61 inches... 

Titrate the calamine with the zinc oxide and starch and incorporate uniformly in the petrolatum by levigation in a mortar or on a glass slab with a spatula. Mineral oil should not be used as a levigating agent, since it would soften the product. A portion of the petrolatum can be melted and used as a levigating agent is so desired. IX. RDX may be used alone in pressed charges, although for this purpose tetryl is a more general choice. For shell and bomb fillings it is too sensitive alone to initiation by impact and friction and is either desensitised with wax, or else used like PETN in admixture with TNT. RDX may also be compounded with mineral jelly and similar materials to give a useful plastic explosive. 

Single base" smokeless powder, developed mainly in the United States, uses only nitrocellulose. "Double base" smokeless powder, developed in Europe, is a blend of nitrocellulose and nitroglycerine. "Cordite," a British development, consists of 65% NC, 30% NG, and 5% mineral jelly. The mineral jelly (a hydrocarbon material) functions as a coolant and produces substantial amounts of CO 2, CO, and H 2O gas to improve the propellant characteristics. "Triple base" smokeless powder, containing nitroguanidine as a third component with nitroglycerine and nitrocellulose is also manufactured. 

Test tubes, each contg O.lg of a NC expl, are suspended in a bath of mineral jelly preheated to 100°. A strip of Kl-starch paper is suspended above the sample. Heating of the bath is continued, by raising the temp 5° per min, until the point is reached at which the test paper begins to color. This point is taken as an indication of the stability of the NC proplnt.

It has long been observed that very beautiful crystals sometimes develop in gels. Wonderfully fine crystals of sugar frequently grow in ordinary fruit jellies. Many splendid mineral crystals are embedded in silica and appear to have developed while the silica was in the state of a gel. For this geological aspect of the subject, consult the papers of Cornu in the first five volumes of Kolloid-Zeitschrift. The experiments on crystal growth require some time for the proper development of the crystals, but the technique of the method is very simple and easily acquired. 

The mineral jelly was added with the idea that it would lubricate the gun barrel and reduce its erosion. Actually MJ did not lubricate the barrel because it was consumed during combustion of the proplnt. However, the presence of MJ proved to be advantageous in other ways. 

Mineral Jelly (Ref l),Evaporate most of the ether from the extract on a water bath. Remove the remainder with a stream of air. Dry the residue in an oven at 60° C for 1 hour. Then add 20 ml of 80% methyl alcohol (by volume) and heat to gentle boiling on a water bath. Decant the hot solvent thru a small funnel fitted with a 7 cm No 41 Whatman filter paper and collect the filtrate in an iodine flask. Retain as much mineral jelly in the extraction flask as possible. Repeat the extraction twice, using 10 ml of 80% methyl alcohol making 40 ml in all. Finally wash the filter paper six times with hot 80% methyl alcohol... 

Transfer the filter paper to a Soxhlet extractor using the original extracting flask containing the mineral jelly. Extract the paper for 2 hours with ethyl ether. Distil the ether from the flask on a water bath and then in an oven at 100°C to constant weight. Calculate the % MJ from the formula ... 

The mineral jelly was added to cordite originally with the idea that it would lubricate the barrel of the gun, but it seems to have no such effect- Actually it is consumed during the combustion. Because of it the powder gases contain a larger number of mols... 

Mineral jelly in cordite has a distinct stabilizing action. The material is known to take up nitric oxide in the nitrometer and to cause a falsely low nitrogen analysis if it is present in the material which is being analyzed.9...
