Shoulders

Isaac Newton modestly claimed to have stood on the shoulders of giants to explain how he was able to achieve his outstanding discoveries in the fields of gravitational attraction and planetary motion our Giants in the field of electromagnetic induction would probably have said the same.

There is a fundamental difference between such scientific controversies and what simply can be called scientific fraud, i.e., deliberate falsification or fudging of data. Sloppy experimental work or data keeping can also lead to questionable or incorrect conclusions, and, although these violate established scientific standards and must be corrected (as they will), they do not necessarily represent deliberate fraud. In all this, the professor has a strict personal responsibility. As he/she is getting most of the recognition for the accomplishment of the research, it is only natural that he/she must also shoulder the responsibility for any mistakes, errors, or even falsifications. In order to balance public domain science with a high quality commercial software product it has been necessary for us to reimplement almost every aspect of computational chemistry embodied in HyperChem. All HyperChem source code is written in C or C-t-t, specified, designed, and implemented by Hyper-Chem s developers. We have stood on the scientific shoulders of giants, but we have not used their FORTRAN code Thus, although we have had access to MOPAC and other public domain codes for testing and other purposes, HyperChem computes MINDO, MNDO, and AMI wave functions, for example, with HyperChem code, not MOPAC code. We have made the effort to implement modern chemical science in a modern software-engineered product.

Low-pressure hysteresis is not confined to Type I isotherms, however, and is frequently superimposed on the conventional hysteresis loop of the Type IV isotherm. In the region below the shoulder of the hysteresis loop the desorption branch runs parallel to the adsorption curve, as in Fig. 4.26, and in Fig. 4.2S(fi) and (d). It is usually found that the low-pressure hysteresis does not appear unless the desorption run commences from a relative pressure which is above some threshold value. In the study of butane adsorbed on powdered graphite referred to in Fig. 3.23, for example, the isotherm was reversible so long as the relative pressure was confined to the branch below the shoulder F. 

It is apparent that it is not particularly easy to determine the exact areas of these features when the various contributions occur together to any significant extent. This is clear from the atactic spectrum, in which slight shoulders on both the methylene and methyl peaks are the only evidence of meso methylenes and iso methyls.

A small (25-kg), portable apheresis system, available in 1993, is designed to meet a wide variety of blood cell separation needs. The role of the apheresis system is to control the behavior, separation, and collection of blood components from the bowl while maintaining maximum donor safety. The system controls the flow rates of blood and components through variable pump speeds. It directs the flow of components out of the bowl, by fully automatic opening and closing of valves based on the output of the system sensors. The system monitors the separation of blood components in the bowl by an optics system that aims at the shoulder of the bowl. A sensor on the effluent line monitors the flow of components out of the bowl.

A bursa, a sac filled with fluid located around a principal joint, is lined with a synovial membrane and contains synovial fluid. This fluid minimizes friction between the tendon and the bone, or between tendon and ligament. Repeated small stresses and ovemse can cause the bursa in the shoulder, hip, knee, or ankle to swell. This swelling and irritation is referred to as bursitis. Some patients experience bursitis in association with tendonitis. Bursitis can usually be reheved by rest and in some cases by using antiinflammatory medications. Some orthopedic surgeons also inject the bursa with additional medication to reduce the inflammation. 

Another member of the FGF family, FGF-4, protects against radiation-iaduced ceU killing and enhanced the G2 arrest when overexpressed ia a human adrenal cortical carcinoma ceU line (196). This effect is again manifested as the appearance of a shoulder on the survival curve, although neither the control nor the transfected cells undergo radiation-iaduced apoptosis. No differences ia the yield or repair of either SSBs or DSBs have been observed. 

Overcuring is encountered to some degree in all compounds of any thickness because of the slow conductance of heat through mbber. Earthmover tires may have tire shoulder gauges in excess of 0.3 m (- 12 in.). The outside/inside are overcured to effect a satisfactory state-of-cure in the tread mbber.
