Another method devised for direct sampling of solids involves direct insertion of the sample into the plasma. In this procedure the sample is delivered through the central tube of the torch. The sample may be premixed with graphite powder.

A carbon rod is used as a current collector for the positive electrode in dry cells. It is made by heating an extruded mixture of carbon (petroleum coke, graphite) and pitch which serves as a binder. A heat treatment at temperatures of about 1100 °C is used to carbonize the pitch and to produce a solid structure with low resistance. For example, Takahashi [23] reported that heat treatment reduced the specific resistance from 1 Q cm to 3.6xlO"1Qcm and the density increased from 1.7 to 2.02 gem- 1. Fischer and Wissler [24] derived an experimental relationship [Eq. (1)] between the electrical conductivity, compaction pressure, and properties of graphite powder ... 

Include plastics with coefficient of friction, chemical resistance, and others. Many plastic materials inherently have a low coefficient of friction. Other plastic materials can incorporate this property by compounding a suitable ingredient such as graphite powder into the base material. It is an important feature for moving products, which provides for selflubrication. Chemical resistance is another characteristic that is inherent in most plastic materials the range of this resistance varies among materials. 

There are plastics that have equal or less than those of other materials of construction (metals, glass, or wood). In fact with certain additives such as graphite powder contraction can occur rather than the expected expansion with the application of heat. However many plastics typically have coefficients that are considerably higher than those of other materials of construction such as metals. This difference may amount to a factor of 10 to 30. Also available are plastics, particularly TS-RPs, with practically no change. 

The actual utility of this discovery depends on the ability to go from hosts consisting of expensive, highly oriented, pyrolytic graphite to hosts composed of cheap graphite powders or fibers. Care must be taken on intercalation, because defects in such low-rank graphites may affect not only the intrinsic conductivity of the host (Z4) but may also serve as sites for oxidative reactions that may disrupt the host (Ell).

The catalyst used throughout this study was a 1% w/w palladium on graphite powder (S.A. 10 mV ) supplied by Johnson Matthey. 2-nitroacetophenone, 3-nitroacetophenone and 4-nitroacetophenone (all Aldrich >99 %) were used without further purification. No significant impurities were detected by GC. Gases (BOG, >99.99 %) were used as received.

For electrode manufacturing, powder of Ni(OH)2 was used, produced by H.C.Starck, USA. The product has mean particle size of d50 6p.n1. It was mixed with conductive additive, such as, for instance, refined graphite powder.
