Gyclopentadiene/Dicyclopentadiene-Based Petroleum Resins. 1,3-Cyclopentadiene (CPD) is just one of the numerous compounds produced by the steam cracking of petroleum distillates. Due to the fact that DCPD is polymerized relatively easily under thermal conditions without added catalyst, resins produced from cycloaHphatic dienes have become a significant focus of the hydrocarbon resin industry. 

Approximately 100 different organic peroxide initiators, in well over 300 formulations, are commercially produced throughout the wodd, primarily for the polymer and resin industries (22—27). A multiclient study covets the commercial producers and users of organic peroxides as well as other initiators, and their commercial markets and appHcations (28). 

Lac became an important component of decorative and protective finishes by the nineteenth century. It is ironic that the success of shellac led to the synthetic resin industry. Baekeland developed phenoHc resins while trying to find a substitute for shellac.

Methods for achieving low styrene emissions in the unsaturated polyester resin industry are discussed. The necessity for new formulations to maintain the same mechanical properties as the previous ones is considered. When it announced the acquisition of Solutia s resins, additives, and adhesives business in December 2002, UCB surprised analysts as well as employees, who were all expecting an acquisition in pharmaceuticals rather than in chemicals. The acquisition, however, was not completely opportunistic. UCB Chemical s business development department was continuously on the lookout for value-creating opportunities to give the business more critical mass in an industry where suppliers and customers were rapidly consolidating, which made a concentration wave in the resins industry inevitable over time. In this context, the acquisition was a clear no-regret move the acquisition price was attractive and could easily be financed by UCB, and there were many complementarities as well as synergies. In addition - and as clearly stated at the time - the increased scale created more options for the future, including a possible spin-off or divestment. 

Lignin is used in many industries. Unsulfonated lignins are used in the production of vanillin and dimethyl sulfoxide. Around 1.4 million tonnes of unsulfonated lignins are produced per annum and used in the polymer resin industry to manufacture plywood. Alkali treated lignins could also be a potential feedstock for polyurethane industries and used in the production of novel polyurethane composites.

The aerospace industry has had a pronounced influence on developments in thermoset resins that are also useful for other industrial applications. The efforts of the aerospace Industry in the science of thermoset resin processing will afford techniques that are applicable to a broad range of nonaerospace applications. Fabrication of resins into aerospace products is but a step away from being a complete scientifically controlled process from resin formulation to finished hardware. As this work becomes a practical reality, the entire thermoset resin industry will benefit.

OTHER COMMENTS used as an oxidizing agent used in the manufacture of dyes and hydroquinone can strengthen animal fibers and make gelatin insoluble used in pharmaceutical industry for production of cortisone use in polymer and resins industry use as a tanning agent for leather industry. 

Valuable chemicals are recovered from the gas in the coke plant. Bensene is used in the production of nylon, toluene euid xylene are used as solvents and in the making of various chemicals. Phenols recovered from tar amd the gas find uses in meJcing thermosetting phenolic plastics. Ammonia is used as fertiliser in aigriculture. Coumarone-indene recovered from the high boiling solvent is used in the resin industry. Naphthalene recovered from tar is used to make phthalic anhydride. There are literally hundreds of compounds in the tar and the chemicals recovered from the coke oven gas. Several of these are in sufficiently laurge concentrations to make recovery in pure form economically feasible.

Modem technical data also include many dynamic properties obtained by measurements over a wide spectrum of frequencies and temperatures, in addition to data on mechanical properties in a wide range of times and rates. Quite often the data may be described by a master curve providing extremely widely applicable information with some sacrifice of accuracy. On the other hand in most cases, the material consists not only of a single polymer but of a host of additives and modifications. At present there is much use of copolymers in a variety of compositions (including blocks and grafts), polyblends, composite systems and many stabilizers and additives. In practice, a giant additives industry has been developed along with the resin industry.
