Acquisition prices

Figure 2 shows the acquisition price for U.S. natural gas at the wellhead, together with the acquisition prices of cmde oil in both the international market and the U.S. domestic market (21). On a cost per unit energy basis, natural gas has been priced lower than cmde oil by factors ranging from 1.4 to 3.5 for the period shown. 

When it announced the acquisition of Solutia s resins, additives, and adhesives business in December 2002, UCB surprised analysts as well as employees, who were all expecting an acquisition in pharmaceuticals rather than in chemicals. The acquisition, however, was not completely opportunistic. UCB Chemical s business development department was continuously on the lookout for value-creating opportunities to give the business more critical mass in an industry where suppliers and customers were rapidly consolidating, which made a concentration wave in the resins industry inevitable over time. In this context, the acquisition was a clear no-regret move the acquisition price was attractive and could easily be financed by UCB, and there were many complementarities as well as synergies. In addition - and as clearly stated at the time - the increased scale created more options for the future, including a possible spin-off or divestment.

Acquisition prices are set by the downstream tier and passed back to the upstream tier sequentially from the downstream to upstream boundary tier, as shown in the lower part of Figure 4. In this chapter, we focus on a single horizon of the transaction problem where entities do not collect items in excess of the amount they need to supply to the next tier. Due to this flow conservation rule, the resulting flows can be determined as the acquisition prices are reaUzed. Finally the sites in the first tier decide the collection fees to acquire recycled items from sources.

Historical data management—This includes the data acquisition and storage capabilities. Present-day prices of storage mediums have been dropping rapidly, and systems with 80 gigabyte hard disks are available. These disks could store a minimum of five years of one-minute data for most plants. One-minute data is adequate for most steady state operation, while start-ups and shutdowns or other non steady state operation should be monitored and stored at an interval of one second. To achieve these time rates, data for steady state operation can be obtained from most plant-wide D-CS systems, and for unsteady state conditions, data can be obtained from control systems.

Note that the number of diffraction peaks decreases with time as the droplet diameter decreases, and the number density of peaks is very nearly proportional to the droplet size.
