Then, in the early and mid-1 990s, CAS developed SciFinder and SciFinder Sc ho lar to address the needs of professional chemists and other scientists. SciFinder was developed to allow more intelligence in data access, such as smart structure searching, research topic exploration, advanced author searching, and powerful refine and analysi.s capabilities including categorize and panorama". [Pg.242]

The reinaining five search topics (Research Topic, Author Name, Document Identifier, Company Namc/Organii ation, and Browse Table of Contents arc conducted in a similar fashion, with the input being the only difference between the criteria. Thus, in Research Topic" the entry can be any, or even several, keywords or phrases. In "Author Name", literature written by a specific author will be Found, including alternative spelling, Document Identifier" can also be entered directly in the query. Document identifiers arc CA abstract numbers, patent numbers, patent application numbers, or priority application numbers. The last two search topics (Company Name/Organi2ation, and Browse Table ofContents) allow one to search for literature from specific companies or to view the list of journals which are available in the database. [Pg.246]

Membrane Cliaraeterization MF membranes are rated bvtliix and pore size. Microfiltration membranes are imiqiielv testable bv direct examination, but since the number of pores that rnav be obsen ed directlv bv microscope is so small, microscopic pore size determination is rnainlv useful for membrane research and verification of other pore-size-determining methods. Furthermore, the most critical dimension rnav not be obseiA able from the surface. Few MF membranes have neat, cvlindrical pores. Indirect means of measurement are generallv superior. Accurate characterization of MF membranes is a continuing research topic for which interested parties should consult the current literature. [Pg.2045]

Chemoinformatics (or cheminformatics) deals with the storage, retrieval, and analysis of chemical and biological data. Specifically, it involves the development and application of software systems for the management of combinatorial chemical projects, rational design of chemical libraries, and analysis of the obtained chemical and biological data. The major research topics of chemoinformatics involve QSAR and diversity analysis. The researchers should address several important issues. First, chemical structures should be characterized by calculable molecular descriptors that provide quantitative representation of chemical structures. Second, special measures should be developed on the basis of these descriptors in order to quantify structural similarities between pairs of molecules. Finally, adequate computational methods should be established for the efficient sampling of the huge combinatorial structural space of chemical libraries. [Pg.363]

One criterion for the anode material is that the chemical potential of lithium in the anode host should be close to that of lithium metal. Carbonaceous materials are therefore good candidates for replacing metallic lithium because of their low cost, low potential versus lithium, and wonderful cycling performance. Practical cells with LiCoOj and carbon electrodes are now commercially available. Finding the best carbon for the anode material in the lithium-ion battery remains an active research topic. [Pg.343]

The purpose for which the analytical data are required may perhaps be related to process control and quality control. In such circumstances the objective is checking that raw materials and finished products conform to specification, and it may also be concerned with monitoring various stages in a manufacturing process. For this kind of determination methods must be employed which are quick and which can be readily adapted for routine work in this area instrumental methods have an important role to play, and in certain cases may lend themselves to automation. On the other hand, the problem may be one which requires detailed consideration and which may be regarded as being more in the nature of a research topic. [Pg.6]

Because of the AFM s versatility, it has been applied to a large number of research topics. The AFM has also gone through many modifications for specific application requirements. [Pg.20]

We should not minimize the effects that electronic searching of patents has had on the business of research. In 1990, CAS introduced MARPAT, which is a database of Markush (generic) structures found in patent documents [1]. This database provided a valuable tool for patent searching in a more comprehensive way than had been available previously. In 1995, CAS launched SciFinder, which provided access to the patent literature for chemists on their desktops. Using the SciFinder interface, one may search for research topics, authors, companies, or structures/reactions. From a practical viewpoint, SciFinder did more to enhance the searching capabilities of the medicinal chemist than any other tool. Even today, SciFinder continues to provide a first pass through the patent literature when chemists want to include patents in their searching. Indeed, when a search is performed, patent references are included in the answer set. Only very recently have there been additional tools to search the patent literature that have found widespread use. [Pg.303]

It is worth noting that the past few years have witnessed tremendous development of web-based information resources. Notably, the PubMed search tool [4] has made the investigation of any life sciences topic much easier. It offers keyword and author (as well as structure and sequence) searches and covers a wide range of medicinal chemistry-related journals. This resource, coupled with e-journals, affords the medicinal chemist the tools to keep up with any research topics of interest. Because of the public nature of the Web, now a chemist can sometimes find critical journal articles on the Web that do not show up until much later in traditional literature sources. It is not uncommon that scientific meeting presentations can be found on the Web. Indeed, the Internet tools we have all become familiar with also have made the professional life of the medicinal chemist much easier. [Pg.304]

There are several areas of study that will help you understand the research topic. As a first step you will want to read the clinical protocol. The protocol describes the device or medication to be used, the patient populations under study, the statistical plan of the clinical trial, and the details of the disease state. If you want to understand the disease state or indication further, you may want to seek out a clinical investigator of the clinical trial or do some further reading about the disease. Understanding the patient population is a good way to understand the data that you will see and whether there is reason for concern when viewing the data. For example, if you were studying a medication to reduce hypertension, you would not be as worried if patient blood pressure data were elevated at baseline. You would expect to see this because you understand that hypertensive patients have high blood pressure. [Pg.11]

Stine reassured him, We are interested in you because we believe you will not only do work of a high order, but also that you will select worth while problems.. .. I mean worth while from a scientific point of view and not from the point of view of direct financial returns. Tempting Carothers with a supply of skilled assistants, Stine promised that, if Du Pont considered his research topics interesting, his research team would grow. [Pg.119]

The above mechanistic aspect of electron transport in electroactive polymer films has been an active and chemically rich research topic (13-18) in polymer coated electrodes. We have called (19) the process "redox conduction", since it is a non-ohmic form of electrical conductivity that is intrinsically different from that in metals or semiconductors. Some of the special characteristics of redox conductivity are non-linear current-voltage relations and a narrow band of conductivity centered around electrode potentials that yield the necessary mixture of oxidized and reduced states of the redox sites in the polymer (mixed valent form). Electron hopping in redox conductivity is obviously also peculiar to polymers whose sites comprise spatially localized electronic states. [Pg.414]

We want to take this opportunity to thank all the authors who have contributed to these two parts in various research topics. We hope these contributions will provide a general view on the current trends in chemical dynamics research, and will be helpful to both experts and newcomers in the field. We appreciate very much the great efforts made by Ms. Ying Oi Chiew who has done a superb job in editing the books. [Pg.536]

EPA Exposure Assessment Workshops - Level I and II. In April 1982, the EPA Office of Research and Development (ORD) organized two workshops designed to assess and identify current techniques (i.e., data, protocols, predictive models) used in performing exposure assessments, enumerate technical information gaps, and recommend prioritized research topics to satisfy current and anticipated needs. The Level I workshop was comprised of... [Pg.153]
