Current trends

The demand for man-made polymers and polymeric fibers is growing due to the flexibility of processing, which allows a material with specific mechanical, electrical, optical, and chemical features to be tailored to fit a specific application. This has led to an increase in research to find more source polymers. However, the growth in man-made polymers has raised environmental and health issues. Research and developmental activity has increased in the development of biopolymers to meet the current and future demand for sustainability. There is also a need to develop processing equipment for the production of fibers in the nanometer range. The future of polymer production appears to be interesting and commercially sustainable.

The choice of contract type will depend upon the type of work, and the level of control which the oil company wishes to maintain. There is a current trend for the oil company to consider the contractor as a partner in the project (partnering arrangements), and to work closely with the contractor at all stages of the project development. The objective of this closer involvement of the contractor is to provide a common incentive for the contractor and the oil company to improve quality, efficiency, safety, and most importantly to reduce cost. This type of contract usually contains a significant element of sharing risk and reward of the project. 

The project "Non-Invasive Inspection within an Asset Risk Management Strategy" is another joint industry project, funded by EC-THERMIE, representing the current trend towards onstream (non-invasive) inspection in combination with risk-based inspection philosophies to establish component condition. In this project, industry and authorities participate aiming at a beneficial use of today s NDT without sacrificing on safety. 

The third important source for infonnation on modem Raman spectroscopy are the books cataloguing the proceedings of the International Conference on Raman Spectroscopy (ICORS) [37]. ICORS is held every two years at various international locations and feahires hundreds of contributions from leading research groups covering all areas of Raman spectroscopy. Although the published presentations are quite limited in lengdi, they each contain references to the more substantial works and collectively provide an excellent overview of current trends m Raman spectroscopy. A snapshot or brief sununary of the 1998 conference appears at the end of this chapter.

Current Trends. Many current trends will most likely intensify. Company resources devoted to R D will grow increasingly precious. Those involved in the R D process will have to find even more ways to work smarter, lower costs, and get mote done with less (103). "How much R D " will be asked on a regular basis. 

Because zinc-based alloys have low melting points, energy savings in the melting operation are substantial and the foundry operation is essentially free of fume. With the current trend of increasing energy costs and pollution control, cost benefits can be considerable (114). 

Butanol is produced commercially by the indirect hydration of / -butenes. However, current trends are towards the employment of inexpensive Raffinate 11 type feedstocks, ie, C-4 refinery streams containing predominandy / -butenes and saturated C-4s after removal of butadiene and isobutylene. In the traditional indirect hydration process, / -butenes are esterified with Hquid sulfuric acid and the intermediate butyl sulfate esters hydroly2ed. DEA Mineraloel (formerly Deutsche Texaco) currentiy operates a 2-butanol plant employing a direct hydration of / -butenes route (18) with their own proprietary catalyst. 

Continuing the current trend, there will be an even greater need to provide highly effective dispersants with minimum environmental impact. Future development efforts will focus on improved performance at low dosage to further reduce the environmental load, accountability (ability to detect... 

NMR instrumentation consists of three chief components a magnet, a spectrometer console, and a probe. While in the past much solid state NMR research was conducted on home-built equipment, the current trend is toward the acquisition of commercial systems. The magnets used for solid state NMR applications generally are superconducting solenoids with a cylindrical bore of 89-mm diameter. The most common field strengths available, 4.7, 7.0, 9.4, and 11.7 Tesla, correspond to proton resonance frequencies near 200, 300, 400, and 500 MHz, respectively. 

Quality levels are the result of a ratio of parts defective to parts produced. The current trend is to use parts per million (ppm) but this is not always practical for some processes. Painting processes for instance cannot achieve blemish-free surfaces in the order of one blemish per million parts painted ... 

Whatever you do, don t act on suspicion, always confirm that a problem exists or that there is a certain chance that a problem will exist if the current trend continues. 

Molecular structure theory is a fast-moving subject, and a lot has happened since the First Edition was published in 1995. Chapters 3 (The Hydrogen Molecule-ion) and 4 (The Hydrogen Molecule) are pretty much as they were in the First Edition, but 1 have made changes to just about everything else in order to reflect current trends and the recent literature. I have also taken account of the many comments from friends and colleagues who read the First Edition. 

In some cases H-bond also includes a directional term such as (1 -cos ) or (cos0 )" multiplied onto the distance dependent part in eq. (2.18). The current trend seem to be that force fields are moving away from such specialized parameters and/or functional forms, and instead accounting for hydrogen bonding purely in terms of electrostatic interactions.

It seems unlikely that feedbacks due to species replacement have begun since the beginning of the Mauna Loa record because compositional changes due to climate change will take decades and have not yet been documented on a wide scale. However, this fact increases the importance of such feedbacks to future trends in atmospheric CO2 when these feedbacks become important it is highly unlikely that positive and negative feedbacks will exactly cancel each other and more likely that one or the other will prevail and cause deviations from current trends in atmospheric CO2.
