In diatomic VER, the frequency Q is often much greater than so VER requires a high-order multiphonon process (see example C3.5.6.1). Because polyatomic molecules have several vibrations ranging from higher to lower frequencies, only lower-order phonon processes are ordinarily needed [34]- The usual practice is to expand the interaction Hamiltonian > in equation (03.5.2) in powers of nonnal coordinates [34, 631,... [Pg.3037]

Another difficulty is that the extent to which hydrogen bonded association and ion-pairing influence the observed kinetics has yet to be determined. However the high order of the reaction in the stoichiometric concentration of nitric acid would seem to preclude a transition state composed only of a nitronium ion and an aromatic molecule. [Pg.225]

Antibiotics are toxic water-solubie compounds produced by molds or bacteria which inhibit the growth of other microorganisms. For an antibiotic to be useful in medicine it should have a high order of selective toxicity to microorganisms which are pathogenic to man. Al-... [Pg.310]

The good mechanical properties of this homopolymer result from the ability of the oxymethylene chains to pack together into a highly ordered crystalline configuration as the polymers change from the molten to the solid state. [Pg.1012]

Individual chains are planar with alternating cis—trans conformation along the chain, and the interaction with neighboring chains leads to a highly ordered matrix. [Pg.241]

Permanent chemical crimp can be obtained by creating an asymmetric arrangement of the skin and the core parts of the fiber cross section. Skin cellulose is more highly ordered than core cellulose and shrinks more on drying. If, during filament formation in the spin bath, the skin can be forced to burst open to expose fresh viscose to the acid, a fiber with differing shrinkage potential from side-to-side is made, and crimp should be obtained (Fig. 5a). [Pg.349]

The existence of tridymite as a distinct phase of pure crystalline siUca has been questioned (42,58—63). According to this view, the only tme crystalline phases of pure siUca at atmospheric pressure are quart2 and a highly ordered three-layer cristobaUte having a transition temperature variously estimated from 806 250°C to about 1050°C (50,60). Tridymites are considered to be defect stmctures in which two-layer sequences predominate. The stabihty of tridymite as found in natural samples and in fired siUca bricks has been attributed to the presence of foreign ions. This view is, however, disputed by those who cite evidence of the formation of tridymite from very pure siUcon and water and of the conversion of tridymite M, but not tridymite S, to cristobahte below 1470°C (47). It has been suggested that the phase relations of siUca are deterrnined by the purity of the system (42), and that tridymite is not a tme form of pure siUca but rather a soHd solution of minerali2er and siUca (63). However, the assumption of the existence of tridymite phases is well estabUshed in the technical Hterature pertinent to practical work. [Pg.475]

The larger the value of n, the more uniform is the size distribution. Other types of distribution functions can be found in Reference 1. Distribution functions based on two parameters sometimes do not accurately match the actual distributions. In these cases a high order polynomial fit, using multiple parameters, must be considered to obtain a better representation of the raw data. [Pg.331]

Mechanical Properties. The hexagonal symmetry of a graphite crystal causes the elastic properties to be transversely isotropic ia the layer plane only five independent constants are necessary to define the complete set. The self-consistent set of elastic constants given ia Table 2 has been measured ia air at room temperature for highly ordered pyrolytic graphite (20). With the exception of these values are expected to be representative of... [Pg.510]
