Propoxylation

Hydrogenation of furfuryl alcohol can yield 2-tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol, 2-methylfuran, 2-methyltetrahydrofuran, or straight-chain compounds by hydrogenolysis of the ring. Ethoxylation and propoxylation of furfuryl alcohol provide usefiil ether alcohols. [Pg.79]

In the 1990s, the thmst of surfactant flooding work has been to develop surfactants which provide low interfacial tensions in saline media, particularly seawater require less cosurfactant are effective at low concentrations and exhibit lower adsorption on rock. Nonionic surfactants such as alcohol ethoxylates, alkylphenol ethoxylates (215) and propoxylates (216), and alcohol propoxylates (216) have been evaluated for this appHcation. More recently, anionic surfactants have been used (216—230). [Pg.194]

Ethoxylation and Propoxylation. Ethylene oxide [75-21-8] or propylene oxide [75-56-9] add readily to primary fatty amines to form bis(2-hydroxyethyl) or bis(2-hydroxypropyl) tertiary amines secondary amines also react with ethylene or propylene oxide to form 2-hydroxyalkyl tertiary amines (1,3,7,33—36). The initial addition is completed at approximately 170°C. Additional ethylene or propylene oxide can be added by using a basic catalyst, usually sodium or potassium hydroxide. [Pg.219]

A significant use of ethoxylated and propoxylated amines is as antistatic agents (qv) in the textile and plastics industry (86). Ethoxylates are also used in the agricultural area as adjuvants. Ethoxylated fatty amines and derivatives are available from Akzo Chemicals Inc. (Ethomeen) (73) Henkel Corporation (Trymeen) (87) GAE Chemicals Corporation (RhcJ)ne Poulenc) (Katapol) (88) Jetco Chemicals Inc. Step D Chemical Reduction Preparation of 3-Morpholino-4-(3-tert-Butylamino-2-Hydroxy-propoxyl-l,2,5-Thiadiazole — The 3-morpholino-4-(3-tert-butylamino-2-oxopropoxy)-1,2,5-thiadiazole (0.01 mol) is dissolved in isopropanol (10 ml). To the solution is added sodium borohydride in portions until the initial evolution of heat and gas subsides. The excess sodium borohydride is destroyed by addition of concentrated hydrochloric acid until the mixture remains acidic. The precipitate of sodium chloride is removed, ether is added, and the solution is concentrated to crystallization. The solid material is removed by filtration and dried thus providing 3-morpholino-4-(3-tert-butylamino-2-hydroxypropoxy)-1,2,5-thiadiazole, MP 161° to 163°C (as hydrochloride). [Pg.1490]

The hydrolysis of 0.05 N surfactant solutions was carried out in 0.05 N HC1 solution at 80°C. These constants demonstrate that propoxylated sulfates are less stable than those ethoxylated and all them less stable than alcohol sulfates. The time for 50% hydrolysis was 92 min for sodium hexadecyl ether (1 PrO) sulfate, 98 min for sodium octadecyl ether (1 PrO) sulfate, 136 min for sodium octadecyl ether (1 EO) sulfate, and 187 min for sodium hexadecyl sulfate... [Pg.233]

Chlebicki and Slipko [127] determined the foam ability of sodium propoxyl-ated alcohol sulfates by the Ross-Miles method. These substances are low-foaming surfactants the greatest foam height was observed for dodecyl and tetradecyl chains. As expected, as the number of polyoxypropylene units on the same alcohol chain increases, foam height decreases. The maximum foam height obtained was 225 mm for a 2 g/L solution of sodium tetradecyl (1 PrO) sulfate. [Pg.269]

Chlebicki and Slipko [127] also determined the wetting ability of series of sulfated propoxylated alcohols. The introduction of propylene oxide groups... [Pg.270]

Ether carboxylates have also been used in formulations with ethoxylated amines, ethoxylated and propoxylated nonionics, or ethoxylated castor oil and alkanolamides for one-bath dyeing or printing with cationic and anionic or disperse dyes [176],... [Pg.341]

Using magnesium ether carboxylates as emulsifier a porous polyvinylchloride can be made [218] and a propoxylated ether carboxylate is described as emulsifier to make an ethyl acrylate-styrene copolymer [219]. A crosslinked latex with a three-dimensional network is achieved by polymerizing an ethylenically unsaturated monomer with a reactive saturated monomer using ether carboxylate as emulsifier [220]. [Pg.345]

With 13C-NMR it is possible to estimate the propoxylation and ethoxylation degree and to get an idea about the conversion to ether carboxylate. [Pg.348]

Ethoxylated and propoxylated alkylphenol amines, converted into the amides with a fatty acid or similar long chain diacids, are effective in controlling sour and sweet corrosion [1782,1783,1785-1787]. [Pg.88]

Polycarboxylated polyalkoxylates and their sulfate derivatives may be prepared by reacting an ethoxylated or propoxylated alcohol with a water-soluble, alkali or earth alkali metal salt of an unsaturated carboxylic acid [339]. The reaction occurs in aqueous solution in the presence of a free radical initiator and gives products of enhanced yield and reduced impurity levels, compared with the essentially anhydrous reactions with free carboxylic acids, which have been used otherwise. The method provides products that give solutions that are clear on neutralization, remain clear and homogeneous on dilution, and are useful as cleaning agents in drilling and other oil field operations. [Pg.314]

A demulsifier composition that is a blend of (1) a propoxylated-ethoxylated block copolymer of a bis-hydroxyalkyl ether and (2) a propoxylated-ethoxylated block copolymer of 2-hydroxymethyl-1,3-propanediol has been described [1750,1751]. [Pg.333]

The blend is partially crosslinked with a vinyl monomer when dissolved in an organic aprotic solvent and has a pH of 5.0 or lower. The first block copolymer is prepared by polycondensing a bis-hydroxyalkyl ether, such as dipropylene glycol, diethylene glycol, and the like, with propylene oxide. Next, the resulting propoxylated diol is reacted with ethylene oxide to produce the block copolymer. The second copolymer is prepared by polycondensing 2-amino-2-hydroxymethyl-1,3-propanediol, commonly known as TRIS, with... [Pg.333]

Propylene oxide (PO) is an important intermediate in the manufacture of a wide range of valuable products propylene glycol, ethers, isopropanolamines, and various propoxylated products for polyurethanes (1). The current processes for the large scale synthesis of PO include (i) the chlorohydrin process and (ii) the peroxide process (1, 2). [Pg.403]

In the case of an aliphatic alcohol such as iso-octanol, a similar level of defoaming activity together with a much less offensive odour can be achieved by using a propoxylated ester of a branched aliphatic acid, such as propylene-1,2-glycol mononeodecanoate (10.290). [Pg.285]

TADDOL ligand over the competing (achiral) catalyst [Ti(OPr1)4]. The rate enhancement by the TADDOL ligands is due to an increase in the rate of ligand exchange in the TADDOL complex over the Ao-propoxyl complex because of the steric bulk of the TADDOL compared with two Ao-propoxides. [Pg.114]

Ethoxylation of alcohols, alkylphenols, fatty acids, and many other organic raw materials is also a very important reaction for the surfactant industry, used to produce a broad variety of surfactants, most of which belong to the non-ionics group. The reaction with propoxylation (PO) is also practised, although to a lesser degree. The product used for ethoxylation is EO, or PO in the case of propoxylation, and is conducted using alkaline catalysts such as NaOH or NaOCH3. [Pg.60]
