Conditions to be met in oven drying enamels depend also on the composition of the binder. Paint systems containing melamine-formaldehyde or urea-formaldehyde resins, for instance, harden by polycondensation with other resins, such as epoxy resins, short-oil alkyd or acrylic resins at elevated temperatures. Baking is carried out at temperatures between 100 and almost 200°C and may last from a few minutes to more than an horn. A general trend towards energy conservation has shifted public attention towards binders which require low baking temperatures. [Pg.154]

There are numerous types of paint employed in the protection of steel and they are designed to meet the conditions imposed by the environment in which they are expected to function. Only a limited amount of resin can be added to white paints due to its intrinsic color. Addition of these hard resins increases the hardness and the gloss of the paint films, accelerates and improves the drying of oxidatively cross-linking alkyd resins, and optimises sanding properties and corrosion protection in putties. Modified phenolic resins have lost much of their importance because they have been replaced by more efficient binder systems (e.g., thermoplastic and cross-linkable acrylic resins, polyurethane systems). Epoxy paints (see also Section 2.10) are usually applied as two-pack systems. Curing with amines is preferred in high-solids systems. Epoxy resins may also be used as coreactants or reactive diluents in low-solvent paints based on acrylic, polyester, or alkyd resins. [Pg.108]

Field trials have shown that the expected durability of the new waterborne coating systems is equal to that of conventional solventborne paints. As a further advantage, the number of single coats can be reduced from three to two. Heating oil storage premises must be equipped with a collection trap so that any heating oil leaking from the tank cannot contaminate the soil. Ethylene-ethyl acrylate resins ethylene glycol n. CH2OHCH2OH. A type of alcohol, completely miscible in water, used in latex and water-based paints to provide stability when frozen used in heating and cooling systems as a fluid for transferring heat. Tsuge et al. [986] have reported DHS-GC-FID (wide-bore capillary column) in the study of paint coatings (acrylic/melamine resin/(LS-440 or LS-292 (HALS), Tinuvin 1130 or Tinuvin 900, surface modifier, organic solvent)). DHS-GC provides a sensitive technique for quantification of HALS and UVA occluded in cured polymeric materials such as coating paints. The optimum thermal desorption temperature was decided empirically. The system permitted fairly accurate determination of HALS (LS-440 and LS-292), which were almost quantitatively recovered, within an analysis time of 1.5 h. Reproducibility for Tinuvin 900 was less satisfactory, whereas Tinuvin 1130 was not observed because of its extremely low volatility. [Pg.288]

The selection of TSA systems and functional monomers are generally made on the basis of performance criteria for the final paint system. For example, curing temperatures and the performance of different thermosetting acrylic resin systems vary depending on the type of curing mechanism.
