Lead antimonate [13510-89-9] (Naples yellow), Pb2(Sb0 2> mol wt 993.07, d = 6.58g/cm, is an orange-yeUow powder that is insoluble in water and dilute acids, but very slightly soluble in hydrochloric acid. Lead antimonates are modifiers for ferroelectric lead titanates, pigments in oil-base paints, and colorants for glasses and glazes (see Colorants for ceramics). They are made by the reaction of lead nitrate and potassium antimonate solutions, followed by concentration and crystallization. [Pg.70]

The main use of these clays is to control, or adjust, viscosity in nonaqueous systems. Organoclays can be dispersed in nonaqueous fluids to modify the viscosity of the fluid so that the fluid exhibits non-Newtonian thixotropic behavior. Eor water-based alkyd paints, greater (0.2% cobalt on a resin basis) concentrations of drier are required than for other systems because the reaction of the drier with water decreases the activity of the catalyst. The cobalt content of oil-based paint formulations is usually 0.01—0.05% cobalt. Paint applied to a suitably prepared zinc coating will last longer than would be the case if it were applied direct to iron or steel, and the need for repainting thus becomes less frequent. With hot-dip galvanised or zinc-plated coatings, however, it is necessary either to use special primers or to prepare the surface before painting.
