In addition to poly(methyl methacrylate) plastics and polyacrylonitrile fibres, acrylic polymers find widespread use. First introduced in 1946, acrylic rubbers have become established as important special purpose rubbers with a useful combination of oil and heat resistance. Acrylic paints have become widely accepted particularly in the car industry whilst very interesting reactive adhesives, including the well-known super-glues are also made from acrylic polymers. [Pg.399]

Hairspray is formulated to hold hair in place and keep it shiny, without flaking off, without failing, even in humid conditions. Yet it must retain the ability to be washed out of the hair easily for at least forty-eight hours, and it must not clog the spray can s nozzle. Complex polymers are needed to perform all of these tasks well. The basic building blocks of these polymers are the same ones found in acrylic paints and white glue. ThermoWood is not resistant to exterior weathering and the colour will gradually change to the grey that is characteristic of outdoor exposed wood. In addition, exposure in exterior conditions results in the formation of small cracks on the surface of uncoated wood. Unpigmented or low-build stain coatings do not protect the surface of the wood, but solvent-borne alkyds and water-borne acrylic paints have been found to exhibit better performance than on unmodified wood. VOC emissions from the heat-treated wood are lower compared to unmodified wood and the compositions of the emissions differ. The level of emissions is lower when the wood is treated at a higher temperature. Emissions of terpenes are reduced to very low levels, and the VOC content is dominated by furfural, hexanal and acetic acid (treated at 180 °C), and by acetic acid (treated at 230 °C). ThermoWood passes ecotoxicity tests. [Pg.179]

Since the 1950s, synthetic polymers have been used as art binders. The most common groups are referred to as the vinyls and acrylics by artists. Both groupings represent a wide variety of polymers and copolymers and are inaccurately, or at best not accurately, named. For polymer scientists, the term vinyl generally refers to PVC, but to artists it may refer to many other materials. Even so, most of the synthetic paint market today is based on acrylics. Acrylic paints are typically water emulsions of synthetic polymers. In art, the term acrylic is used to describe a wide variety of polymers and copolymers that can be considered as derivatives of acrylic acids. Most acrylics used in art binders are PMMA (Equation 6.61), PVAc (Equation 6.64), poly( -butyl methacrylate) (Equation 6.65), and copolymers such as poly(ethyl acrylate-comethacrylate). [Pg.199]

Acrylic paints have compositions similar to water-based house paints. Since they are synthetic, manufactures can design paints that fulfill specific requirements and that are the same from tube to tube. Because water is the main vehicle such paints are largely odorless. They are not completely odorless because while the overwhelming majority of the vehicle is water, there are often minute amounts, generally 1%-10%, of organic liquid added to help the particles of polymer remain sufficiently flexible so that they will lay down a thin smooth coating. [Pg.199]
