Abbasi et al. bulk- and surface-modified PDMS with poly(acrylic acid) using a sequential method for preparation of polymer interpenetrating networks of PDMS/acrylic acid, as shown in Figure 23.5 [1,26]. This was used as an effective biomaterial for cochlear implants. Cured PDMS was swollen when in contact with the monomer solution of acrylic acid, which contained the initiator as well as the crosslinker. The swollen PDMS was then kept under polymerization conditions to activate the initiator and the crosslinker. The curing after polymerization helped in formation of interpenetrating networks. An important example of a non-ISRP phase is the shielded hydrophobic mixed funchon material known as Capcell Pak MF . This phase consists of porous silica derivahzed with a silicone polymer. Silane coupling agents may contribute hydrophilic properties to the interface, especially when amino functional silanes, such as epoxies and urethane silanes, are used as primers for reactive polymers. The primer may supply much more amine functionality than can possibly react with the resin at the interphase.
