Pfaltz and Bauer

Materials NMAAM, (Pfaltz and Bauer), NEAAM, NNBAAM, NTBAAM (Monomer-Polymer and Dajac Laboratories, Inc., Trevose, PA), NIPAAM (Eastman Kodak Company, Rochester, NY), AAM, ammonium persulfate (Bio-Rad Laboratories, Richmond, CA) and TEMED (Sigma Chemical Co., St. Louis, MO) were used as received. NEAAM was also obtained from Polysciences. Sephacryl S-400 was obtained from Sigma. All other chemicals were reagent grade or better. 

F. Blue 2B 250% (C.I. Direct Blue 6, C.I. No. 22610), Direct Brown BRL 200% (C.I. Direct Brown 95, C.I. No. 30145) Fabricolor Inc. Evans Blue (C.I. Direct Blue 53, C.I. No. 23860), Benzo Azurine G (C.I. Direct Blue 8, C.I. No. 24140) Pfaltz and Bauer Inc. Benzidine was obtained from Sigma Chemical Co., o-tolidine from Fisher Scientific Corp. and 3,3 -dimethoxybenzidine (o-dianisidine) from Eastman Kodak Company. Aniline, -aminophenol, -phenylenediamine and -nitroaniline used in the interference study were obtained from Chem Service Inc.

Tetramethylguanidine, b.p. 159-160°, was used without further purification. The submitters obtained their material from Schuchardt, Munich, Germany and the checkers obtained theirs from Pfaltz and Bauer, New York. 

The submitters used allene purchased from Matheson Gas Products, Inc. The checkers found that an old lecture bottle of allene from this source gave unsatisfactory results, affording a crude product that contained up to 20% of unchanged geranyl chloride. Other lecture bottles of allene from Matheson or Pfaltz and Bauer were satisfactory. 

Vanadyl naphthenate (in benzene) was used to metal load aluminas and aluminosilicate gels according to an established procedure (15) the naphthenate was obtained from Pfaltz and Bauer, Inc., and contained 2.9 wt% V. Decomposition of the naphthenate was performed by calcining the impregnated materials for 10 hours at 540 C in air. All catalysts were then steam-aged for five hours with -100% steam at 760 C in a fluidized bed.

Reagents. Para-Bis-A polymerization-quality bisphenol-A (Dow Chemical Co.) was recrystallized once from toluene. Pfaltz and Bauer s 4,4 -dichlorodiphenylsulfone was recrystallized three times from ethanol. Reagent phenol (Baker) and 4,4 -biphenol (Eastman s white label) were used as received. Spectroquality methyl sulfoxide, dimethyl acetamide, and dimethylformamide (Matheson, Coleman, and Bell) were used as solvents. 3,5,3, 5 -Tetramethyldiphenoquinone and hexamethylphosphor-amide (Aldrich) were used as received. 

Synthesis. Styrene monomer. Polysciences Inc., and divinylbenzene, DVB, Scientific Polymer Products, were cleaned by a column chromatographic technigue using neutral alumina. Poly(vinyl methyl ether). Scientific Polymer Products, My = 1.3x10 g/mole, was supplied as a 50 wt% toluene solution. Dicumyl peroxide, Pfaltz and Bauer, benzoin, Aldrich Chemical, and toluene, Fisher Chemical, were used as received. 

Nltroetbane, CH3CH2NO2. Mol. wt. 75.07, b.p. 112-114°. Suppliers Aldrich, Baker, Columbia, Howe and French. MCB, Pfaltz and Bauer. 

Silver perchlorate, 2, 369 370. Additional suppliers Alfa Inorganics, Fluka, K. and K, Pfaltz and Bauer, ROC/RIC, Sargent.

The DHDECMP is obtained from Wateree Chemical Company, Lugoff, South Carolina, and is purified by an ion exchange method to approximately 67% pure the method and extractant impurities have been described elsewhere. Diisopropylbenzene (DiPB) was obtained from Pfaltz and Bauer, Inc. The extractant is 30% DHDECMP in DiPB.
