Manufacturing of products

Simple conventional refining is based essentially on atmospheric distillation. The residue from the distillation constitutes heavy fuel, the quantity and qualities of which are mainly determined by the crude feedstock available without many ways to improve it. Manufacture of products like asphalt and lubricant bases requires supplementary operations, in particular separation operations and is possible only with a relatively narrow selection of crudes (crudes for lube oils, crudes for asphalts). The distillates are not normally directly usable processing must be done to improve them, either mild treatment such as hydrodesulfurization of middle distillates at low pressure, or deep treatment usually with partial conversion such as catalytic reforming. The conventional refinery thereby has rather limited flexibility and makes products the quality of which is closely linked to the nature of the crude oil used. 

The combination of durability and clarity and the ability to tailor molecules relatively easily to specific applications have made acryflc esters prime candidates for numerous and diverse applications. At normal temperatures the polyacrylates are soft polymers and therefore tend to find use in applications that require flexibility or extensibility. However, the ease of copolymerizing the softer acrylates with the harder methacrylates, styrene, acrylonitrile, and vinyl acetate, allows the manufacture of products that range from soft mbbers to hard nonfilm-forming polymers. 

Quality in the Chemical Industry. The chemical iadustry uses quahty as a strategic tool for financial success. Oae measure of quahty is the degree of product variatioa from lot to lot. Ia the chemical iadustry, it is oftea difficult to provide product speciftcatioas comprehensive eaough to easure product performance ia all apphcatioas (21). Therefore, the manufacture of product having a minimum of lot-to-lot variabihty allows the customer to use the product without modifying their formulation or process to accommodate such variation. 

Nutritional Requirements. The nutrient requirements of mammalian cells are many, varied, and complex. In addition to typical metaboHc requirements such as sugars, amino acids (qv), vitamins (qv), and minerals, cells also need growth factors and other proteins. Some of the proteins are not consumed, but play a catalytic role in the cell growth process. Historically, fetal calf semm of 1—20 vol % of the medium has been used as a rich source of all these complex protein requirements. However, the composition of semm varies from lot to lot, introducing significant variabiUty in manufacture of products from the mammalian cells.

Fermentation An anaerobic bioprocess. An enzymatic transformation of organic substrates, especially carbohydrates, generally accompanied by the evolution of gas as a byproduct. Fermentation is used in various industrial processes for the manufacture of products (e.g., alcohols, organic acids, solvents, and cheese) by the addition of yeasts, moulds, and bacteria.

Alternative, it enables the production of novel products, which are less environmentally damaging than products made via conventional chemical routes. We will use two examples to illustrate these principles.

The major disadvantage associated with urea-formaldehyde adhesives as compared with the other thermosetting wood adhesives, such as phenol-formaldehyde and polymeric diisocyanates, is their lack of resistance to moist conditions, especially in combination with heat.
