Internet to the central computer. The processing of the data to compare the results from the many different laboratories is then performed and the reports returned to the laboratory. Since the individual control observations are entered into the PC, the control data are then immediately tested by internal control procedures to determine control status. When you start working across the Internet, the chromatography data system becomes an open system and the FDA rule requires controls. Using FDA s definition of electronic records, the laboratory chromatography data system generates electronic records. Based upon the definition, laboratories will need to consider more than just the raw data tiles. One must also include the method tiles, mn sequence tiles, and the integration parameters used for the data analysis. Cochrane Library. The Cochrane Library [44] includes The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, a collection of regularly updated, systematic reviews of the effects of health care. It is maintained by contributors to the Cochrane Collaboration. Cochrane reviews are reviews mainly of randomized controlled trials. To minimize bias, evidence is included or excluded on the basis of explicit quality criteria. Data are often combined statistically, with meta-analysis, to increase the power of the findings of numerous studies, each too small to produce reliable results individually. Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effectiveness is also included. It consists of critical assessments and structured abstracts of good systematic reviews published elsewhere. The Cochrane Controlled Trials Register with bibliographic information on controlled trials and other sources of information on the science of reviewing research and evidence-based health care are part of the Cochrane Library. A simple example of the first method is to screen requests to ensure that they come from an acceptable (i.e., previously identified) domain name and Internet protocol address. Firewalls may also use more complex rules that analyze the application data to determine if the traffic should be allowed through. For example, the firewall may require user authentication (i.e., use of a password) to access the system. How a firewall determines what traffic to let through depends on which network layer it operates at and how it is configured. Open systems refer to computer setups in an environment where a specific person who is responsible for the stored data does not control system access. A good example of an open system is the Internet. Specialist controls are required such as encryption and digital signature standards like Public Key Infrastracture (PKI) to provide necessary assurance in electronic records and electronic signatures. [Pg.369]

The Internet is a classic example of an open system in the definition of 21 CFR Part 11 Open system means an enviromnent in which system access is not controlled by persons who are responsible for the content of electronic records that are on the system.
