A large underground mine had a write-on board erected in the area where the miners collected their cap lamps at the beginning of their shift. The board listed all the underground near miss incident reports and a separate column on the board showed what action had been taken for each reported event as well as the completed dates. Systems involving an interface are often metastable, that is, essentially in equilibrium in some aspects although in principle evolving slowly to a final state of global equilibrium. The solid-vapor interface is a good example of this. We can have adsorption equilibrium and calculate various thermodynamic quantities for the adsorption process yet the particles of a solid are unstable toward a drift to the final equilibrium condition of a single, perfect crystal. One route to o-nitrobenzyl ketones is by acylation of carbon nucleophiles by o-nitrophenylacetyl chloride. Aerosols can be produced as a spray of droplets by various means. A good example of a nebulizer is the common household hair spray, which produces fine droplets of a solution of hair lacquer by using a gas to blow the lacquer solution through a fine nozzle so that it emerges as a spray of small droplets. In use, the droplets strike the hair and settle, and the solvent evaporates to leave behind the nonvolatile lacquer. Antibiotics. Solvent extraction is an important step in the recovery of many antibiotics (qv) such as penicillin [1406-05-9] streptomycin [57-92-17, novobiocin [303-81-1J, bacitracin [1405-87-4] erythromycin, and the cephalosporins. A good example is in the manufacture of penicillin (242) by a batchwise fermentation. Amyl acetate [628-63-7] or -butyl acetate [123-86-4] is used as the extraction solvent for the filtered fermentation broth. Then the pH is again lowered and the penicillin is re-extracted into the solvent to yield a pure concentrated solution. Deformation is the relative displacement of points of a body. It can be divided into two types flow and elasticity. Flow is irreversible deformation when the stress is removed, the material does not revert to its original form. This means that work is converted to heat.
