Research articles of interest to biochemists may appear in many types of research journals. Research libraries do not have the funds necessary to subscribe to every journal, nor do scientists have the time to survey every current journal copy for articles of interest. Two publications that help scientists to keep up with published articles are Chemical Titles (published every 2 weeks by the American Chemical Society) and the weekly Current Contents available in hard copy and computer disks (published by the Institute of Science Information). The Life Science edition of Current Contents is the most useful for biochemists. The computer revolution has reached into the chemical and biochemical literature, and most college and university libraries now subscribe to computer bibliographic search services. One such service is STN International, the scientific and technical information network. This on-line system allows direct access to some of the world s largest scientific databases. The STN databases of most value to life scientists include BIOSIS Pre-views/RN (produced by Bio Sciences Information Service covers original research reports, reviews, and U.S. patents in biology and biomedicine), CA (produced by Chemical Abstracts service covers research reports in all areas of chemistry), MEDLINE, and MEDLARS (produced by the U.S. National Library of Medicine and Index Medicus, respectively cover all areas of biomedicine). These networks provide on-line service and their databases can be accessed from personal computers in the office, laboratory, or library. Some... 

Remote login is the ability of a computer user in one location to establish an on-line connection with another computer elsewhere. Once the connection is established, the remote computer is used as if it were a hard-wired terminal of that system. Within the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) suite, this facility is called Telnet. Using Telnet, an Internet user can establish connections with a multitude of library catalogues, other bibliographic databases, university information systems, full text databases, data files (eg, statistics, oceanographic data, meteorological data, and geographic data), and other on-line services. Many of these connections are available to any Internet user and can be accessed without an account. 

BRS Online Service contains over 150 bibliographic and full-text databases in the areas of biomedicine, science, technology, business, economics, humanities, and social sciences (37). BRS/After Dark is an after-hours PC oriented version of BRS Online Service, offered at reduced rates (37). A print-version title publication covering the whole of chemistry is Current Contents Physical, Chemical Earth Sciences which began in 1967 and appears weekly, contains the contents pages of aU issues of 800 journals in chemistry, physics, earth sciences, mathematics, and allied sciences. Each issue contains an index of important words taken from the titles of the papers listed in that issue, and an author index, which, however, lists only the first-named author of each paper. The author s address is also given, so that one may write for reprints. An on-line service is available called Current Contents Connect is a multidisciplinary Web resource providing access to complete bibliographic information from >8000 of the world s leading scholarly journals and >2000 books. 

These latter comments are largely out of date given the on-line status of most journals. As mentioned above, pdf files of an article can be downloaded, or they can be read directly via the HTML file using any current browser. The reader is encouraged to contact the library person in your establishment that is responsible for chemical literature and to learn which on-line services are available through your local library.

A "front end" is a computer software package, normally resident in a microcomputer, which isolates the user of a public on-line service from some of the complexities of the retrieval mechanism. At the simplest level, it automates the process of accessing the host computer from which the service is given. Steps in this process may include dialing the computer either directly or through a telecommunications network, supplying the user s identifier and password when prompted by the host computer and possibly selecting the desired file or service for the user.

One potential area of anomaly may be the way in which data protection laws are applied to on-line services such as those provided via the Internet or World-Wide Web. Some of the challenges for data protection legislation raised by the increased use of online services have been discussed in Section 12.3. Can the provisions of the 1995 directive, which may perhaps be regarded as the current state of the art as far as data protection legislation is concerned, meet these challenges The difficult issues are not so much the cases where the data subject is aware that data has been collected and used or even where this information is made available on the Internet since this is, arguably, the type of activity for which data protection law was designed. Rather the problems, as explained in Section 12.3, are more likely to arise as a consequence of the traceability of operations on-line in situations where the potential data subject may not be aware that... 

Free computers. On-line services have competed for "eyeballs" by giving away or deeply discounting the access tool, a personal computer. 

The connection between the user and the remote resource was said to be statefull , in that a complete history of any one session was assumed available, and successive transactions between the user and the remote computer could have access to this history. A good example of this model is the Chemical Abstracts on-line service introduced in the early 1980s, where the user could locally perform a series of defined searches on a central computer system located in Columbus, Ohio. Each query was saved as a named set (LI, L2, etc.), and in subsequent operations, these sets could serve as the starting point for further elaboration of the searches. 

STN Easy is an end-user tool that provides access to high-quality scientific and technical information from some of the most highly regarded databases in these areas worldwide. It allows the user to search for information and in databases that have until now only been offered on specialized professional on-line services. Much of the information is currently unavailable anywhere else on the Internet. The service offers an intuitive, user-friendly GUI, powerful search capabilities (including relevance ranking), output-based pricing, and other features preferred by end-users.
