An ion beam causes secondary electrons to be ejected from a metal surface. These secondaries can be measured as an electric current directly through a Faraday cup or indirectly after amplification, as with an electron multiplier or a scintillation device. These ion collectors are located at a fixed point in a mass spectrometer, and all ions are focused on that point — hence the name, point ion collector. In all cases, the resultant flow of an electric current is used to drive some form of recorder or is passed to an information storage device (data system). [Pg.204]

Data processing. Once information is obtained with an appropriate data system, the information must be interpreted appropriately for the end use. Data processing involves the steps leading to this end use data processing does not necessarily imply application of modem computer techniques. [Pg.431]

Data system. Components used to record and process information during the analysis of a sample. The system includes a computer and an analog-to-digital conversion module as well as other control devices for data recording, storage, and manipulation. [Pg.431]

A laboratory information management system (LIMS) is a computer or computer network used to automate the acquisition and management of raw analytical data. In its simplest form, it tracks samples and test results through analytical laboratories and provides summaries of the status of these samples and tests. In its most advanced form, the system is interfaced to the laboratory s instmmentation and communication network to allow automation of data gathering, compilation, and reporting. [Pg.516]

Laboratory Information Management System. The QC lab must analy2e raw material, in-process, and finished product samples adhere to cahbration schedules record data and perform statistical analyses. These activities lend themselves to the appHcation of software packages such as a laboratory information management system (LIMS) (qv). An inexpensive LIMS is within the reach of even small laboratories. [Pg.368]

The main objective of the In-Plant Reliability Data System (IPRDS) was to develop a comprehensive and component-specific data base for PRA and other component reliability-related statistical analysis. Data base personnel visited selected plants and copied all the plant maintenance wor)c requests. They also gathered plant equipment lists and plant drawings and in some cases interviewed plant personnel for Information on component populations and duty cycles. Subsequently, the maintenance records were screened to separate out the cases of corrective maintenance applying to particular components these were reviewed to determine such things as failure modes, severity, and, if possible, failure cause. The data from these reports were encoded into a computerized data base. [Pg.78]

Fleat transfer cements are quite useful for transferring the heat from an external tracing when attached outside of the process pipe, Figures 10-167 and 10-168. To determine the number of heat transfer steam tracers, it is important to contact the manufacturer of the heat transfer cement. The illustrations here should be considered preliminary for approximating purposes. The information/data that follows is used with permission from Thermon Manufacturing Co./Cellex Div. Except for specific conditions, most applications represent the requirements to maintain a pipe (or vessel) system temperature, not to raise or lower the temperature. [Pg.242]

The Madison Group and its European partner, M-Base, have developed, based on years of research and experience with material data systems, the concepts and software for the management of such application databases. This application database is searchable by part and application. Capability for general component information, multiple classifications, images and text and links to material properties is included. [Pg.606]

The medium used for the transmission of information and data over distances has evolved from copper wire to optical fiber. It is quite likely that no wire-based information transmission systems will be installed in the future. The manufacture of optical fibers, like that of microcircuits, is almost entirely a chemical process. [Pg.53]

Fear of Fraud It is illuminating that there are companies that lock the input to a computer system (specifically a so-called LIMS, a Laboratory Information Management System) in such a manner that it takes the supervisor s password and signature to correct a missed keystroke, even if this is noticed before the (Enter) key is pressed. If the unwitnessed use of the (Backspace) key betrays malicious intent to falsify raw data, then every scientist should be in jail. [Pg.276]

With rapid advances in hardware, database management and information processing systems, efficient and competitive manufacturing has become an information-intensive activity. The amounts of data presently collected in the field on a routine basis are staggering, and it is not unusual to find plants where as many as 20,000 variables are continuously monitored and stored (Taylor, 1989). [Pg.99]
