Reliability relations

The reliability of a component will frequently depend on the length of time it has been in service. Let T, the time to failure, be a random variable having its pdf specified by f(t). Then the probability tliat failure occurs in the time interval (0, t) is given 1  [Pg.573]

Let Uie reliability of the component be denoted by R(t), the probability tliat the component survives to time t. Tlierefore, [Pg.573]

Equation (20.3.2) establishes tlie relationsliip between the reliability of a component and tlie cdf of its time to failure. [Pg.573]

In accordance witli tlie properly expressed in Eq. (19.8.5), the probability tliat a component will fail in the time interval (t, t + At) is given by [Pg.573]

The main objective of the In-Plant Reliability Data System (IPRDS) was to develop a comprehensive and component-specific data base for PRA and other component reliability-related statistical analysis. Data base personnel visited selected plants and copied all the plant maintenance wor)c requests. They also gathered plant equipment lists and plant drawings and in some cases interviewed plant personnel for Information on component populations and duty cycles. Subsequently, the maintenance records were screened to separate out the cases of corrective maintenance applying to particular components these were reviewed to determine such things as failure modes, severity, and, if possible, failure cause. The data from these reports were encoded into a computerized data base. [Pg.78]

In Section 20.2, equations for tlie reliability of series and parallel systems are established. Various reliability relations are developed in Section 20.3. Sections 20.4 and 20.5 introduce several probability distribution models lliat are extensively used in reliability calculations in hazard and risk analysis. Section 20.6 deals witli tlie Monte Carlo teclinique of mimicking observations on a random variable. Sections 20.7 and 20.8 are devoted to fault tree and event tree analyses, respectively. [Pg.571]

In general, a thermometer is called primary if a theoretical reliable relation exists between a measured quantity (e.g. p in constant volume gas thermometer) and the temperature T. The realization and use of a primary thermometer are extremely difficult tasks reserved to metrological institutes. These difficulties have led to the definition of a practical temperature scale, mainly based on reference fixed points, which mimics, as well as possible, the thermodynamic temperature scale, but is easier to realize and disseminate. The main characteristics of a practical temperature scale are both a good reproducibility and a deviation from the thermodynamic temperature T which can be represented by a smooth function of T. In fact, if the deviation function is not smooth, the use of the practical scale would produce steps in the measured quantities as function of T, using the practical scale. The latter is based on ... [Pg.191]

Quantitative analysis demands that an analytical measurement can be accurately and reliably related to the composition of the sample in a strict proportionality (p. 2). The complexity of relationships, especially for instrumental techniques, means that the proportionalities need to be practically established in calibration procedures. For a typical simple calibration, a range of standards is prepared containing varying amounts of the analyte. These are then analysed by the standard method and a calibration curve of signal us amount of analyte is plotted. Results for unknowns are then interpolated from this graph (Figure 2.7). An important convention is... [Pg.16]

The present work is a report of the properties of polyimide which define functionality as an interlevel dielectric/passivant. Thus, the planarizing and patterning characteristics and electrical characteristics of current vs voltage, dissipation, breakdown field strength, dielectric constant, charge and crossover isolation are discussed in addition to the reliability-related passivation properties. [Pg.93]

At laser intensities sufficient to saturate the le-2e transition, the stimulated emission and absorption processes which couple the levels are fast relative to collisional transfer processes, and a quasi-equilibrium balance (e)/Np(e)] is quickly established. If the total population of levels le and 2e is approximately constant during the laser pulse, the upper level population 112(e) can be reliably related to Np(e)0 using an analysis similar to a two level atomic model (1, 2, 3). ... [Pg.147]

Zibn s solid-state powder NMR method, which measures the H H dipolar coupling, is less affected by motional problems and may give a better estimate of c hh Ligand deuteriation is, however, usually ueeded for optimum results. The kind of accuracy that can be achieved is illustrated by the for Kubas complex, 0.890 0.006 A. In the absence of neutron data, X-ray diffraction has been used but its reliability is questionable for H2 complexes. If J(H,D) is observable in the corresponding HD complex, Morris equation can be used. This reliably relates the J(H,D) value directly to ( hh (and to the bond order). [Pg.5743]

Other Methods, Gamma-ray attenuation measures the density of the sample, which is related to changing oil or water content. Gamma-ray density meters are quite common in process monitoring, but they are useful for emulsion characterization only in cases where the solids content is known to be zero or completely constant (33). Otherwise the density information obtained cannot be reliably related to oil or water content. [Pg.88]

The criteria for equilibria involving solid phases are exactly those given in 7.3.5 for any phase-equilibrium situation phases in equilibrium have the same temperatures, pressures, and fugacities. Moreover, pure-component solid-fluid equilibria obey the Clapeyron equation (8.2.27). This means the latent heat of melting is proportional to the slope of the melting curve on a PT diagram and the latent heat of sublimation is proportional to the slope of the sublimation curve. In the case of solid-gas equilibria, the Clausius-Clapeyron equation (8.2.30) often provides a reliable relation between temperature and sublimation pressures, analogous to that for vapor-liquid equilibria. [Pg.334]

Rupe, SammL chem. u, chemMechn. Vortrdge, 1932, xv, 23, whose anecdotes were not always reliable, relates that when Baeyer visited Berthelot in Paris and called him a great chemist, Berthelot said Non, je ne suis pas grand chimiste, je suis un homme d tat. In the laboratory, he said, Berthelot wore a leather apron with a piece cut out of the breast to show the rosette of the legion d honneur. [Pg.465]

With these functional safety requirements in mind, now discussions shall be on various safety and reliability related parameters important for SIS applications. [Pg.649]

Investigations on the influence of fibres on the behaviour of advanced composite materials, where the fibre volume fraction is high and tends to be exploited mostly in an uncracked matrix, provided a system of reliable relations. In brittle matrix composites the situation is somewhat different the fibre volume fraction is usually low and their influence in an uncracked state is small and covered by a large scatter, which is characteristic for these materials properties. The fibres act on, and modify considerably, the brittle matrix behaviour only after the cracking. [Pg.222]

Moreover, the access to a whole family of selectively methylated analogues opens new areas of research in the elucidation of the key role of flavan-3-ol metabolites in human health by offering the possibility of establishing reliable relation-stmcture activities in biological tests. [Pg.152]

The rate of mass transfer between the liquid phase and the solid particles can be a limiting factor in slurry reactors. Therefore a reliable relation for the prediction of this transfer rate is desired. Two different approaches are used to find a theoretical... [Pg.493]
