The periodic shedding produces lateral forces of the same period on the cylinder. Should the cylinder be weakly supported and have a natural frequency close to the shedding frequency, it oscillates strongly in concert with the vortex street. Such behavior is responsible for the singing of power lines, the oscillation of tall smokestacks, and, most spectacularly, for the coUapse in 1940 of the newly built Tacoma Narrows suspension bridge, in Washington state, under the influence of a steady 65 km/h wind. [Pg.91]

For the 1994 crops, 33 beet sugar factories in the United States processed 28.8 X 10 t of beets from 586,000 ha into 4.23 x 10 t (93 x 10 Cwt) of sugar 56% of the domestic production and 47% of the U.S. market. Cwt or hundred-weight of sugar is 100 lbs and is the common unit of commerce in the United States. This is a record level of production, an increase of 12% from the 1990 and 1991 crops. The average factory has a daily processing capacity of 4885 t compared to <3700 t in 1982. Since 1994, three factories in California have been closed and the constmction of one new factory has been announced for central Washington State. European factories process 10,000—15,000 t/d. [Pg.23]

Corrective Action Application At a hazardous waste treatment storage and disposal facility in Washington State, a cyanide-bearing waste required treatment. The influent waste stream contained 15 percent cyanide. Electrolytic oxidation was used to reduce the cyanide concentration to less than 5 percent. Alkaline chlorination was used to further reduce the cyanide concentration to 50 mg/1 (the cleanup objective). The electrolytic process was used as a first stage treatment because the heat of reaction, using alkaline chlorination to treat the concentrated cyanide waste, would be so great that it would melt the reactor tank. [Pg.147]

The thorough and persistent work on precursor decay (the dependence of Hugoniot elastic limit on propagation distance) of Duvall s Washington State University group was successful in demonstrating that precursor attenuation was due to both stress relaxation and hydrodynamic attenuation. Typical data on crystalline LiF is shown in Fig. 2.7. Observed plastic strain... [Pg.29]

Evaluation of the economics of mental illness in primary care is an ongoing initiative of the UK Department of Health (Lloyd and Jenkins, 1995). A similar American study in Washington State included sub-threshold anxiety or depression, but these imposed relatively little economic load compared with disorder-level anxiety or depression (Simon et al, 1995). Mental health treatment accounted for only a small part of overall utilization, approximately 5%. Nevertheless, most patients with anxiety or depressive disorders showed considerable improvement. This was accompanied by only modest reductions in cost. [Pg.61]

Version 3.0 of UNSAT-H was developed under the sponsorship of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) from the UNSAT model beginning in 1979. The early work was documented by publication of version 1.0 of UNSAT-H,79 and the most recent version (3.0) was described by Fayer.80 The UNSAT-H model has been tested for the arid parts of Washington State, a few other arid sites, and at least one location with a wet climate.80... [Pg.1077]
