Material hazard data

Section 2 - Material Hazard Data. This section contains a list of all the materials to be found on the plant - raw materials, intermediates, by-products, effluents, emissions from other facilities close by, catalysts, support materials, services, principle materials of construction and materials encountered during construction and demolition. 

This section should be read in conjunction with the raw material hazard data sheet (see 3.1.3.) and the physical property data sheet (see 3.1.4.).

Occupational Safety and Health J ct. OSHA regulations deal principally with physical aspects of safety and those things generally associated with accident prevention. These federal regulations deal especially with the need for estabHshed material safety data sheets and the proper labeling of printing inks under the Hazard Communication Laws. 

A brief summary of safety and health hazards follows detailed health hazards, however, should be obtained from producers by requesting Material Safety Data Sheets. Proper protective equipment and exposure hazards should be noted before handling any alkan olamine. Detailed toxicological testing is found in the CTEA Chemical Ingredient Review Board Reports on ethanolamines and isopropanolamines (24). 

Handling of Amines. Regulations governing the safe handling and shipping of amines in interstate commerce are given in U.S. Department of Transportation pubHcations (71). Specific information on the safe handling and hazards associated with a particular amine can be found in the Material Safety Data Sheet for that material. For further information on the safety of industrial material see also references 72 and 73. 

Inhalation of certain fine dusts may constitute a health hazard. Eor example, exposure to siUca, asbestos, and beryllium oxide dusts over a period of time results ki the potential risk of lung disease. OSHA regulations specify the allowable levels of exposure to kigestible and respkable materials. Material Safety Data Sheets, OSHA form 20, available from manufacturers, provide information about hazards, precautions, and storage pertinent to specific refractory products. 

Manufacturers of benzene are requited by federal law to pubHsh Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) that describe in detail the procedures for its safe handling. Benzene is classified as a flammable Hquid and should be stored away from any potential source of ignition. Fine and explosion hazard data for benzene are shown (91). 

Polyisoprene mbber is relatively nonhazardous, but must be kept away from sparks, open flames, or excessive heat because it will bum. The current Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) should always be checked for known hazards before using polyisoprene or any other chemical materials. 

While material safety data sheets (MSDS) provide important information they may not provide information on all hazards that may be encountered during processing. A review of the MSDS is not a substitute for conducting a process hazards analysis. Additional information to consider should include ... 

Suppliers must also provide the eustomer with more detailed information on the hazards and safety preeautions of their produets. If the ehemieals are to be used in connection with work this is usually in a Material Safety Data Sheet. Relevant information from Table 1.10 should be included and at least cover that listed in Table 14.10. 

Record potential pollutant sources in the building. Note the locations of major sources. Major sources such as large items of equipment can be recorded on the floor plan. Record the names and locations of chemicals or hazardous substances used or stored within the building, such as those that may be contained in cleaning materials, biocides, paints, caulks, and adhesives. Ask your suppliers to provide you with Material Safety Data Sheets. You may be unaware of the potential hazards... 

The required notification must be provided at ieast annually In writing. Acceptable forms of notice are, for example, a letter, product labeling, and product literature distributed to customers. If you are required to prepare and distribute a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for the mixture under the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) Hazard Communication Standard, your section 313 notification may be attached to the MSDS or the MSDS may be modified to include the required information. Any product which you keep a material safety data sheet (MSDS) for, in accordance with the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard, must be reported, if it was present at your facility in the preceding year, at 10.000 pounds or more at any on time.
